Basement Floor Plan Help

Hi there,

We're in the middle of finishing our basement, which has been framed and the walls are being put up. The primary use is a rec room for the kids.

Here is a rough sketch of the basement. The main room to the left of the steps (not including the laundry area) is about 18' x 18'. Each square of the grid represents half a foot.

Here is a rough idea of how I would set it up. The orange blocks would be an L shaped sofa, with the TV (Yellow) on the left wall. The black square next to the sofa is a support beam, and the blue rectangle in the bottom left is a pop-a-shot basketball game for the kids.

The utility area is not shown, that is out to the right behind that angled blue wall.

Let me know if you think this is the most functional plan. I'm not sure what to do with the nook to the left of the laundry room, but it will probably be a good storage area for the kids' toys.

I think the reason you haven't gotten any comments is because your plan looks good and I can't see any other options because of the support post. If you haven't already, cover the posts so that they're not metal poles in the middle of your nicely finished basement.

Well, pictures would help. What is in the bay areas? What is to the right of the stairs?

The other option would be to put the pop a shot in the back nook area, turn the sofa 90 degrees and put the TV on the bottom wall. Or turn the facing the laundry room, put the TV on the laundry wall, move pop a shot next to the stairs, and add a bar table with seating behind the couch.

If you do a couch instead of a sectional you might have other options, like using the tiny nook by the stairs as the TV space (mount the TV on the wall). Then you have the entire basement to use.

I'll post some pictures once the drywall is up. Right now everything is just open space. Putting the TV to the right of the stairs is an interesting idea. It may be a bit too tight in there unfortunately.

I did think about putting the TV on the bottom wall, but the TV would be larger than the bay area nook and may look a bit strange.

You could drywall over the nook and make it into a hidden media cabinet.

6' isn't so small for a cozy TV watching area if you mount your TV, and if you have a UHD TV you can sit pretty close. We sit about 8' from our 85".

I think that corner seems like the perfect spot for some bookshelves and a bean bag for a cozy reading nook :D But not all children are as crazy about reading as I was.....
