If the rest of the floor is to your satisfaction then they should be able to adjust this last part. Good that you caught it now. Don't let any work proceed until it's adjusted.

Thank you for the advice! Yes, the rest of the floor looks great. We weren't sure if there was some sort of acceptable level of variation, so it's nice to hear that we are being reasonable if we ask them to fix it.

Since this is stone, it's possible there is some irregularity in the squareness of the cuts. That type of defective slate should not be used. If you don't have some leftover product, you may need to purchase more.

Thanks, Beverly. The slate is gauged from Cletile, and they specifically say it can be used for herringbone pattern. Cletile is actually a great tile company - you should check them out if you don’t already know them.

Quick update: the contractor came this morning and agreed to redo the work. They had to pull up half of the tiles (!) in order to get the pattern to lay correctly, and in the process they sliced one of the floor heating coils. We have a patch coming from the heater floor manufacturer tomorrow, so hopefully it won’t add to much or a delay to the project.

That is great news about redoing your tile work. Never settle for any inferior work in your home!

Your first mistake was asking for a too small grout for unevenly sized slate. The second was finding a tile guy who agreed to that.

Thanks, Verbo. In fact, the slate is gauged and the size only varies by 3/32nd of an inch, so the manufacturer recommends 1/8” grout lines. About 100sqf of the floor is laid perfectly, and the redo is going very well, so we’re quite happy to be breaking all of the rules. 😊
