New kitchen table

last modified: 4 years ago

i need a new kitchen table, as ours was damaged in a move. Right now I’m thinking round-to-oval pedestal, but open to other suggestions! I’m looking for something versatile that will work with most any kitchen, as ours will be redone in a few years. Rug will be changed out, as well. If you think I’m on the wrong track, would love a suggestion in comments! Leaving light fixture where it is (though will update it hopefully this summer).

This was my original first choice… i like that it’s sleeker, but it’s almost $2000 more, which is hard to justify with 2 little kids who will destroy it! Sadly our local Marketplace has slim pickings.

Nothing sleek about those tables. Maybe give us bit more info as to what your style is going to be in the kitchen are you planning on keeping that bench? I need more to even guess but IMO all thos etables really look the same and for sure not the X base .

Haha this is why i need help, i dont even know what constitutes sleek! i guess i meant less country? We will not be keeping the bench, the whole set will go.

My overall style preference is wannabe coastal and i like a lot of Pottery Barn, but most of our existing furniture in other rooms is older/heavier (though my next project is new rugs/decor to lighten it up as best i can). Entry is still unfurnished. A lot of my photos probably look familiar because I’ve been asking for a lot of guidance trying to give this place a cohesive look! i was working with a designer, but she keeps trying to skew me too modern. Adjoining family room is going to have a PB Pearson L sectional in light gray and a Rivah rug in chambray if that’s at all helpful.

I voted for the last one just because it looks lighter. Really, the one with the X base looks more like the style of your current Mission style seating.

Maybe I’m totally wrong about round pedestal- is something like this better? this particular one is customizable from ethan allen with different leg options.

I have a round dining room table and it can be made for an oval and if you go with a black table it matches your kitchen rug but if you're going to use that bench I would go with the brown one and I do love my oval shape because it gives me room and you always have more room with a round or oval shape and kids don't bump corners

A pedestal is easier to navigate if you keep the bench.

The bench is part of the current set we have and was damaged by our movers anyway, so not keeping. i definitely prefer round or rounded edges due to the little kids. i’m just so afraid of making the investment and having it look wrong in the space (like i did with my entryway in case anyone followed that thread).

I like the Wilson table or x-space one they're more stable with their legs

I followed. Take your time; buy where you can return what doesn't work.

Looking at the kitchen space, it appears that the round table will not fit, hence I believe a rectangle should be used instead. https://www.bergenfurniturenj.com/ has many options to pick from.

Can the bench of damaged set work in the entry? .. as to selling or donating the matching chairs, some want only 2.

I feel like an oval table could work in that space - giving you the length you need without sharp corners? Not sure if anyone in your family is handy - i bought a beat-up but very solid golden oak oval table and chairs for $30 on Marketplace - painted it black and it looks pretty great, just another option as it can be stressy to invest in furniture if you’re not totally sure what you want/need

Not sure if this would be too ”country” for our space if we refinish it. Theres There’s also this John Thomas, but is the design too contemporary (i think i could customize finish)?

I like your last oval table the best. A black or dark wood table feels too heavy, so anything in a washed white wood or just plain white will work. Is a pedestal table out of the picture? It feels more airy than anything with four legs. My sister has a beautiful condo with a LR/eating area open to her kitchen and her white pedestal table looks beautiful. Her kitchen is similar to yours, too.

I also like this, but would it be too much white and/or too farmhouse-y? (not that i couldnt get it redone, but it’s newly refinished)

I like the marketplace table especially if it is a deal but i would get lighter and sleeker chairs to go with it

I realized that I could also create a totally custom table through this company… would 4-legged be better than a pedestal style? If so, I’d love suggestions for a classic-yet-current leg style.

Thanks Beth H.! From seeing these I’m realizing that it’s hard for me to visualize the completed look because of my outdated light fixtures.

I like the Wilson single pedestal table or the first one that Beth shows. Both of those have symmetrical round bases without "protrusions." Neither of them is too modern. It will be easier to arrange chairs around a table with a symmetrical round base and there is less wood under the table for kids to kick at while they are at the table. I would avoid a stone table -- the weight is a real drawback.

ultimately i do think we’ll go with the Wilson. i just wish it the round bottom didnt have as many ”ripples,” but honestly chairs will block it anyway. My husband likes 4 legs better for stability, though. His need for practicality and my need to finally have some style in my life are often at odds!

I vote for the Wilson with light colored chairs.
