Yes, it can be divided. And older, established plants will benefit from this process. It's a bit of a rejuvenation, much like dividing an established clump of perennials gives them a new lease on life!

Best time to do so is in early spring before the plant starts to send up new shoots for the season. Just dig up the gnarly old root and whack it into manageable chunks. You do not need to be delicate about this and it usually requires a bit of effort :-) Replant ASAP in a suitably prepared new location with lots of sun.
