Dryers have become deeper and those older closets they used to be housed in are no longer deep enough. Your choice is to go with a compact stackable washer dryer unit or take the doors off the closet.

You can pick up a few inches if you switch to barn doors that are mounted outside the frame.

Bev, .......... she can BUY a vented compact as just as above GE pic and accompanying text with specs. . Fits and she need not buy the washer. . Unless of course she needs both : )

Can you do 30-1/2"? If so, the CR-recommended LG DLE7000W or LG DLE7300WE (29-1/2" deep + 1" space required at the rear) would fit.

The issue is not the dryer, but often the exhaust hose that goes from the dryer to the wall.

The LG dryer models above can be vented to the side which is why they only require 1" at the rear.

Sure. Those LG gas dryers can vent to the back, left, or bottom. But the only constraint the OP gave was depth.
