There is no rule. Some people want it to blend in with the ceiling color and others want the fan to make a statement of its own. Depends on your house style, decor and fan style. Personally, I dislike fans inside, so I wired for them in the guest bedrooms, but didn't install any. Outside I have bronze/brown fans in the lanai ceiling, but my ceilings are stained cypress so the fans blend in and aren't making a statement. The fans also match the brown/bronze exterior of my windows and sliders.

I dislike fans but they’re a must in many areas. When I bought for my 10’ ceilings kids’ rooms - I essentially coordinated with the style of furniture they had chosen. I did lean toward a less fussy, neutral style but all those fans were bronze of some sort, wood tone blades. Wall colors were a couple cream and a couple beige. Frankly, what was more important was getting quiet fans that moved a lot of air - especially if they are on 24/7 like ours were.
