table help please!

Having a bit of a table dilemma.

We had this table custom made and it was just delivered. It is beautiful and the craftsmanship is fantastic.

But, it’s really difficult choosing a style and stain online. (Lesson learned!)

It’s a little more traditional than I was expecting. (Maybe because of the rounded corners? And the way the grain is going short length on the table?) I was hoping for a slightly more modern feeling. We paid quite a bit for it and returning it is not an option.

Am I making something out of nothing? Is there a way to update it? Do I need a whole new table?

It's a beautiful table! And I think it looks great in your pretty room, which seems to lean traditional. Maybe remove the table runner for a bit more updated look.

I think I need to know what you were wanting from the maker . IMO you chose all traditional ideas and got exactly that. The stain is not the issue it is the design the type of wood and honestly the direction of the grain is also all wrong if modern was the aim the leg choice was also not right . I think now maybe add some a bit more modern chairs and a new light fixture and be done.

    Thanks for these ideas.

I was hoping for something a little more like this.

As I said, choosing things online is not for me in the future.

It’s a very traditional table, for sure, the kegs especially. It’s hard to tell about the rest of your decor/style and how modern a look you want. You could keep the two end chairs and replace the other chairs with something in a very modern shape but that coordinates. I’d definitely remove the runner. Again, it’s hard to tell from what we can see, but your home looks to be very traditional. Try mixing up the chairs, maybe a new rug and more impactful art on the wall for a modern/traditional mix.

You have a scale issue. The table is much beefier than the chairs, which look spindly next to the table. The rug is a bit too big. The art is a bit too small. You are using multiple neutral colors, which do not coordinate. Do you regularly seat 6? If not, remove the end chairs, turn the runner width-way and get a beautiful centerpiece.

At this point it’s probably a done deal. you can modernize the room by choosing a more modern light fixture, rug, art, chairs, or centerpiece.

Live with it for awhile. I feel it suits your home very well and it was a great choice. Your inspiration pictures is more farmhouse rustic and I do not see that in your homes decor.

Agreed! The the inspiration photo is a little too rustic…

    As far as scale…
I do have plans to enlarge the art on the wall.
Decreasing the number of chairs is not an option. However, I have considered replacing two of the chairs with the table’s matching bench. Thoughts? Do you recommend any other beefier chairs?

If it helps, here are some photos from the other side….apologies for lack of light. (It was early am and we have a bunch of rain clouds today.)

First, take off the table runner and change out the chandelier. Do something interesting and a bit more transitional.

Suggesting you leave the floor bare.

Also, the island is the same shape as the table and as it is now, the island is the star of the show.

Is there any other spot in the kitchen it could go?

I think you could update the room, with decor making a big difference and achieving the look you probably had in mind. You’ll be appreciating room vs focussing on table. Remove: sheers, piece above door, lighting, pictures, table runner. Can be done in stages and avoid cute.

Suggest adding a refurbished cabinet (chalk painting is easy) on back wall to connect all the black and provide balance to that end of room.

Add large art on the other wall.

    Chandelier, centrepiece

    Blinds based on needs

I agree no runner. Add dealer elements elsewhere to tie in chairs more. Otherwise I like it

There is nowhere else to move the island.

Also, very little space for a cabinet. But maybe I can find something small-ish? I love idea of something black.

The art currently on the walls is rather sentimental. But, I do recognize it is too small. Will need to ponder this.

I could possibly remove the curtains altogether. Would that work?

Never thought about removing the rug. Will give it a go!

Thanks all! Welcoming any other input still.

Oh! And currently looking for new light fixture too. ☺️

Your "more like this" photo table looks like it has a wash over it, maybe with a bit of gray. It's hard to tell from photos. Your table could be sanded and restained to look more like that one.

Curtains with a bit more weight to them would be great. Not super heavy but not so wispy.

Perhaps changing out the rugs would help? Or no rug at all? I don't think the combo of chairs and table is necessarily a bad thing, but the grays in the rugs seem to make that warm wood tone clash, IMO. In your photo, the floor and the table wood tones seem to compliment each other.

I like the chairs, and would want to keep them. I can envision an eclectic look with some more accent colors - and a bit more black at various points, so the chairs don't feel so lonely. I spy some colors in those small framed pictures, perhaps pick up on some of them?

Here's a few images I found that sort of convey what I mean about the colors:

Not so much the cow - unless you're into that sort of thing.

I think if the lightshade was black, it would definitely make a difference.

If you live with it for a while and still don't love it, you could always redo the stain to be more like your inspiration photo. But I'd wait and like others have said remove the runner, and try some other things first before messing with that. I like the idea of the hutch or even adding a small buffet cabinet under the prints you already have. The color of the rug throws me off a bit. The rug is beautiful and definitely a great size for a dining table, but it doesn't tie into the rest of the furnishings. Could be that you just need a few accessories to pull out that color somewhere into the room to tie it in. But overall it's a pretty dining area, so I hope you enjoy the new space.

Take off the runner. The apron on the table looks heavier than it is because the runner hides the thinner middle.

This is all very helpful! I will provide an update soon!

FWIW I think your new table is beautiful! Much more classic and timeless than your inspiration photo.

Maybe look for a bit bigger black frames with mat to put your photos in so you can keep them.
I would remove the cart and the gray rug. Add the turquoise color to the table.

I disagree, only partly because most looks current, what's sold in stores. I like the rug alot, in neutrals and a pretty pattern - hand hooked? anyway, the lantern-type is a typical look. The 9 together is also a big thing, sold everywhere. At least your table doesn't have colonial to the max, like mine.

I don't get it about the door curtains either - partly because HGtv doesn't do that? I don't find it awful. I've read many times that our decor is best when our personalities, likes, are included... another step.

I think this type rug would help, and an interesting mix of colors - not exactly saturated, but lively.

With your rug - grey in it? a non-shiny, all I found but it lets the chairs be the contrasting part.

That last rug fro everdebz is beautiful. I love how the kitchen has that aqua container under the cart, with fruit in the bow, and the flowers on the table. That rug in the dining room with a coordinated rug in the kitchen would really insert some personality into the space.

Just wanted to say that the 9 photos/gallery wall are photos we have taken on various travels over the years. So, I’d like to keep them there. In fact, I had plans to add to it but the frames are no longer sold. I am considering reframing with black.

Also, we have a canvas painting that has been waiting to be framed. Considering that for the other wall.

The rug is good quality, but I think I can repurpose it in another room.

Also, we are quite attached to the little cart in the kitchen because if its functionality.

I have a few things coming in over the next week and will see how it all turns out. 🤞🏻

I like the small rug in your kitchen. Does it come in the larger size or something similar to that color and pattern.

It’s actually an anti-fatigue mat that I got ages ago from HomeGoods (I think?). I love it too!

The centerpiece looks too small to me. I would remove the tablerunner.
