rusted lamp post

I have a rusted lamp post in my front yard. What are my options? Can I paint over the rusted lamp or should I replace it with a new one? How easy/hard is the replacement? I’m not very handy at all, so should I consider getting an electrician to do it?

I would use a stiff metal brush to scrape any rust/debris off … wipe well … tape and cover glass, cover plants and area around light from overspray … use a Rustoleum spray primer … then a couple of coats of whatever color you want.

Pick a non-windy day with moderate temps.

how much is actual rust and how much is rusty colored paint. I would take a cloth sprayed with some W-40 and wipe it down. Then see how much is really needing anything.

My mother used to have that exact same lamp post, and it was made of die cast aluminum with a white powder coating, but it was available in multiple colours. If you remove the top of one of the lights, you can tell by looking inside if it is brown painted aluminum or rusted steel. If the former, I would just clean the paint thoroughly and apply a good quality metal primer and top coat. Any paint you can apply will last longer over the powder coat finish than on raw aluminum.

If it is indeed rusted steel, ALL rust must be removed, then you can apply a rust inhibiting primer and top coat designed for ferrous metals.

It looks sound enough to me that you can refinish it following the advice others have already given. Since you describe yourself as not very handy, doing a replacement by yourself is unlikely to turn out well as it requires a number of skills, not the least of which is a safe, outdoor wring installation that complies with current code.

Only call an electrician if you plan to replace it. They don't paint. It is for sure salvageable. Some elbow grease is all that is needed. It will have to be taken apart, all the pieces lightly sanded. Primed with a rust blocking primer then paint it up, black would look best. Since you aren't 'handy' or into DIY you will need to find a friend who is or replace it I suppose. Do you have a 'handy man' service in your area? The electric work required really would not require an ELECTRICIAN, my DH could do it. My daughter would tackle it--Youtube it. One taken down you will find it's a matter of twisting three wires together.

The electrical work required would depend on the type and condition of wiring that currently goes to the lamp post, the condition of the conduit if it's in conduit, and whether it is or needs to be GFI-protected to comply with code. It may not be as simple as "twisting three wires together."

I also see no need to disassemble it to clean it up and prime it. And for someone who is not handy, that could end up with broken parts or a reassembly challenge.
