Small trees came back on one side only, winter or disease?

The two trees in the picture below seem to have been affected by either winter or the same disease The redbud to the right lost its leaves on the exact same side last year during its first summer. That was due to an insufficient watering problem that I caused The Japanese maple survived many winters but this year it came back as in the picture. Not sure what is going on Is this a disease or they are affected by winter

I also have two climbing roses that died back all the way to the ground. I have been struggling with these for years and I can't get them to grow and climb due to these diebacks

Can all these be due to mild winter that tricked the plants to still suck water from the soil and then a sudden temp drop affected them

Both Japanese maples and redbuds are overly prone to Verticillium wilt. That would be something worth further investigation.

Can't see either of the trees clearly enough to comment on what might be the problem. Need individual photos with more detail. We also need to know were you are located (nearest big city) and what your winter was like.

Where are you located ? Sounds like a soil test is in order

That may be the culprit.

What do I need to do to further investigate that do have a proper conclusion and in case it is how do I deal with this

In the US, I would urge you to consult with your country extension service as to what they may need to diagnose the issue and how to go about it. I have no idea if there is a Canadian equivalent - local ministry of agriculture, perhaps? - but that would be the first place I'd start.

If it is verticillium wilt, the tree(s) will eventually die and you should not replant with a susceptible species.

Yes, to varying degrees depending on the rootstock.
