Could it be one of your native Crataegus? Perhaps C mollis? C punctata, macrocarpus, and macrosperum also are candidates… as are many more.

Or a Prunus, given the large single flowers. But not a rose.

Yes-I can see the connection now. It's just that it was so small that made me think rose. I will have to look for seeds in the fall.

The fruit should be forming soon and be visible long before fall. In fact it will probably be eaten pretty quickly. A picture of the developed foliage and a shot of the whole plant would also be helpful. If it is growing in an exposed or heavily grazed area that could be why it is small.

I managed to tale more photos today, I even took along a dish towel to put underneath. There are only two of these growing close together that I'm aware of, and I spent a lot of time today scouring the underbrush for Buckthorn and these are the only two I know of.

Growing in a small hillside next to a road which will be dry in summer.

It is naturalized in Minnesota. Very tasty fruits. My niece had 2 NC trees and had to cut them down because of disease.

I think you have it Jay. The timing is right for Prunous. I'm going to have to think about whether I want to let it thrive there ir not.
