Help me decorate for Christmas

last modified: 13 years ago
I've uploaded four images of my living room and dining room. The living room is a square with large patio doors and baseboard electric heaters.

I'm having an issue figuring out how to decorate and create a flow that doesn't make it feel cluttered.

I currently own a 42 inch flat screen TV and a Pottery Barn Porter desk that takes up the entire dining area as show below.

In one of the images you will see a 3/4 round table that has done dual duty as a TV stand since I moved in last December.

Few notes,

Work from home and only have one bedroom so need to create functional office space with storage options but still want my place to be intimate and cozy. Most of all NO CLUTTER.. Also I own 600 books that are currently sitting in a bedroom closet.

HELP!!

One last thing, I was thinking the closet could be used as a "office storage space"

Another unit I thought was cute but not for me since it would need to be mounted on the walls.
Here is the other staggered shelves I posted before.. It would take two of the narrow and one of the wide shelves to make the image I posted the other day. As I mentioned before this unit is pricey.. around a 1000.00 for the three units.
If you can't afford it, maybe go for the regular Expedit shelves and add glass doors at a later date, when you can afford it. Either that, or everyone gets homemade or handmade this Xmas!
The shelves I just posted are from Dania.. the ones from earlier today will only run 300 for all three units before any doors. Was also thinking of adding baskets on some of the shelves to give it a little extra.
Not sure if anyone who was around before is still here but I purchased the following two items for my place. (Yes I'm slow) :) The console will be used as a media stand.
I'm purchasing the Expedit shelf for the office space this weekend. In White. Still trying to decide the seating area. Goal is still to be ready for Christmas!
The pressure is on! Yes, I remember you, Indy. Had to zip through the thread to refresh my memory though!

Love the coffee table and console. Keep posting. I hope you pick up a few more helpers with your next posts. We'll take you to the finish line!

I give up... Think I've made mistake after mistake because I was nervous and unable to make up my mind. I cancelled the order for the coffee table and media console. After measuring my space and the coffee table I just thought it was too big. So of course the console had to go.

Mistake #2, I purchased a red couch! GASP and now I'm struggling to come up with a color scheme. I was thinking grays and cream accents for the living room to calm the red and grays and creams with accents of red in the office space to connect the two spaces.

    Attaching additional images..

The door area, view from hallways to the bedroom, view from office and also what it looks like with the red couch. The chair is leftover furniture and won't remain in the LR.

Sorry uploaded one twice, here are the rest of the images. I'm actually thinking about returning the red couch if I can't come up with a color scheme that works. Is it even possible to return furniture?
    Better image of the couch
OK, don't panic - don't do anything just yet. One question: what drew to the red couch? What ideas floated around in your head when you went for that couch? What look did you envision? Were you thinking it would be great to have something not like everyone else's? Is it a favourite color in your wardrobe? Spill!
Indy, Here are a couple of ideas for sofa pillows that will work with your red sofa. See if they inspire you, or help you to see a color scheme that you would love to use. The first four below could theoretically all be mixed and matched in your room, although I don't know if you want four pillows on one sofa lol. Maybe if you get an armchair?:)))
The pillows below could be used in a color scheme of red, navy and cream and/or grey.

Whichever color scheme you develop, try to find one multi-color item - maybe in a sofa pillow or a piece of art - and pull your colors from it.

You were drawn to that red sofa for a reason, so don't give up on it too quickly! Ready-made sofas can usually be returned, but there will probably be a re-stocking fee so you will lose some money in the return.

    Good Morning Karen,

When shopping for couches this store was the only place that had "apartment sized" couches. This one just really stood out, was firm like I like my couches and on sale. They had it paired with a set of wood,metal...rustic tables.

Last night I almost purchased a pallet table with wheels but refrained.Trying to be smarter with my purchases moving forward.

I've dreamed of a warm, cozy and inviting place. Something Uncluttered and a place that puts a smile on my face when I open the door.

Last night I purchased a dar gray cable knit throw from West Elm. It looks great on the couch.

Looking at the pillows none of them really stand-out.

Wondering if I should paint the walls a different color in the living room?

    This is the throw/color.

This is the table I almost purchased. Only issue the iKea items won't match it. Plus it's pretty wide when you think of the couch/room.
I also think the couch is slightly modern/retro so I need to remember that when purchasing complimentary pieces.
Indy, This probably sounds weird but if we could find a few pillows that you really, really like, I would be able to zoom in on your style a bit better. Same with art - one piece of art that you just love, and you can decorate a whole room around it.

If you could start posting either pillows or art that you love, I will help you hone the look so that everything works together.

Hold off on the wall painting idea for now. Let's see what color scheme develops from these other choices. I personally have always liked white walls for a modern, fresh feel, and it seems like any art you hang on them just looks good. I'm also remembering your 600+ books lol - those will offer a lot of color, and will be art in themselves!

Btw, the coffee table you almost bought does look a little big, but the style of it would work with the Ikea furniture. A mix of modern and rustic is a great look!

I've been searching for the last hour or so but still looking for other images to share. The following are just images of rooms I love. First up - Cozy

    I love these clocks..

    Pillows I like

Last one before you run me out of here. This is a lamp I purchased this week.
Indy, Thanks for showing me what you love. I'm seeing lots of texture, lots of knots and sweater fabrics, some rustic, so e casual, mainly neutrals - and no red! My dear, we can make the red work but you must be sure you can live with it. We can definitely use creams and greys, but you will need a few little hits of red here and there, otherwise the sofa will be the elephant in the room. It can just be a bit of red in some piece of art, maybe one sofa pillow with some red in the pattern and the other pillows neutral, and that would be enough.

I'm going to start with pillows and art. You don't have to like the art - it would just be to show you how the red sofa could work. But pillows - we must find a couple of pillows you love!

And just want to clarify - are you interested in dark blues at all, or for sure wanting to stick with cream and grey?
Oh, and I like the lamp - it's a keeper!
And the second pic of pillows you posted - the grey and the beige pillow - are those from
    West Elm?
Now it's my turn to inundate you with pics lol! I could have gone on forever but forced myself to stop at the 10 or 12 below.
    And some more.
And some more. Remember that the painting doesn't have to be very big. Depending on where you hang it, just a 16X20" might be enough. It doesn't have to be a big splash of red covering half your wall!
    And the last three.
    Ok, possible pillow combinations:
    Another combination.
    One more.
And some odds and ends that could be combined with other neutrals.
I also found this rather funky little hallway table on Shades Of Light website for $299.
Indy, I'm wondering if this coffee table would work for you. It's from West Elm.
    Fun tables, Karen!!
Well, now I'm just playing around lol! Here are some collages showing how your room might look with various combinations of art and pillows. And if you don't like any of them, you will probably at least become sure of what you don't want! And hopefully this will help you decide of keeping the red soda is the way you want to go.

Love the top right! Warm, cozy, modern yet rustic! Beautiful!

Finally on my laptop so I can respond :) Karen, you're awesome. I love that West Elm table the sales lady showed me one in white which I didn't think would work. The color you posted is gorgeous!! :)
I love the top right and bottom left combinations. Blue accents don't work for me be it pictures or pillows. Didn't realize that until looking at the images so thank you for getting me to think about it. The second combination of pillows I really like. The first combination would come in second. None of the odds worked for me.

Found some additional images to share this morning. The third image is just an image I liked without the stripped walls.
bubbasgma, warm is what I want. :)
We love Karen!!!! She is AWESOME!
Funny, this is the image that has been my desktop on my work computer since last Christmas. Just vision red for the couch instead of white/cream.
Yay, we're making progress! And there you go -'that last pic you posted shows that red is definitely a color you love! And the greys and creams definitely make it modern, as well as being easy to work with.

Maybe the place to start is with that coffee table. It seems like it should be your next purchase, before the accents and details.

Also, where are you at with the .expedit bookshelves and whatnot? And did you definitely keep the Porter desk? Because you know I love it - it's a beauty!

You may not end up going with the exact pillows in your first choice series, but I'll post the sources now just so it's on the thread - the first two are from an online pillow and fabric store called tonicliving.com. You might want to take a look at their site because they have a ton of pillow patterns, all modern and right on-trend. So lots of grays for sure. The third pillow, the little lamb wool cutie, is West Elm. Maybe pick that up when you go get that coffee table haha. And the fourth, the knitted cream pillow, is Crate & Barrel.

Not sure if you're still around Karen but this is the coffee table I FINALLY purchased. Also I did keep the Porter desk :) I just can't give it up too great of a find and a piece I know I will have for years to come.
Indy! Good morning! I am still around, and I remember you well! Yes, the Porter desk is a beauty and I would keep it too.

And I love that coffee table - it looks very functional, with its different compartments, and also looks like the perfect size and dimensions for a small space.

I assume that isn't your room in the pic lol?

Have you set up bookcases or otherwise found a spot for your stuff?

Keep posting progress - I'll be here!
You are probably long past the pillow stage, but here are some current finds - first two are Crate & Barrel, third is Ikea and fourth one is from West Elm.
Oh Karen, I'm no where near finished and still no new pillows. I started a new thread yesterday with some updated pictures but I'm still no where close to being finished. Here's the new thread link. I love the gray pillow at the bottom :)
