Non-native Wisteria is lovely to look at but they send out roots far and wide and then those roots make new plants 6 or more feet away. They need a very heavy duty trellis. I have Amethyst Falls, an American Wisteria, and it is a less of a problem. I do prune it and tie it up to keep it under control. Its flowers are not the same as the non-native but still pretty. Depending on where you live what about an evergreen Clematis?

I wouldn’t even think about planting a wisteria near a pool for the reasons above.

Obviously I think a wisteria is a poor choice for you.

I know this is a past post but im curious if you decided to plant one? i have 3 wisteria trees, one of which i havent taken out of the growers pot yet because I really want to get rid of it, but alas, it was a gift from my husband, same as the other 2. My Amethyst Falls give me the biggest grief and they’re supposed to be noninvasive. Im getting roots shooting up 40+ yards away from the tree, any small clipping will sprout and take over, as mine did in my wooded area. I cant control it. If you train it into a tree, it will require weekly/biweekly pruning to keep its shape. Knowing what I know now, I would not recommend wisteria, let alone planting one where you need to keep it contained. My trees were grown from grafts and sold by a reputable nursery near me, so I’m confident they’re American. I do wish you luck if you’ve bought one and hope you have an easier time with yours.

We had 2 wisteria plants in our previous house, growing on the pergola over our patio. It constantly dropped leaves, flowers and pods. Birds liked to eat the flowers and then pooped purple over our pavers and patio furniture. Rats also loved hanging out in the dense vines and foliage. It took days of work to rip it all out. The only way we eventually killed off the 2 huge root systems was by burying them in cement!
