Whats wrong with my spruces?

Can someone PLEASE tell me whats happening to these spruces? I noticed some needle drop last year and this spring its become way worse. Plus the new growth on the affected branches is stunted and droopy. Quite a few branches have zero new growth. I realize some spruces are disease prone but these were here when we bought the place and I hate to lose them. Pics in comments.
Edit to add: I'll take any suggestions of good disease resistant windbreak trees for southern Iowa. Might as well think about replacing these if we're going to be fighting stuff like this.

    Those are blue spruce? I have heard blue spruce don't do well in the midwest and eastern US and eventually die having not lived very long. They prefer the conditions of the rocky mountian west.
