Please help with details for my son’s bathroom.

Lots of questions, I appreciate the help on as many (or few) of the questions you would like to answer!

Here's what we know so far-

Tile- 3x12 Florida Tile Emotive Pride Blue in Silk

Layout- double running bond 1/2 offset (see black tile in picture) The tile will run vertically to the ceiling in the shower and then wrap around the pony wall, behind the toilet, and stop where the window stops.

Floor (bathroom and shower) tile- Pixl Electro-Funk Matte Hex in Fog

Grout- TBD

Fixtures- Delta Trinsic in Matte Black

Not pictured- shower door with the hinges on the right, controls in the pony wall by the vanity

Tile Edges-

Bullnose comes in 3x12 and 3x6. It would work for the edges where the tile goes to the ceiling. But it wouldn’t work for the half pieces above the toilet. Is there a fix for that?

Or use a tile edge trim (Schluter)? Not my favorite but is that the best choice here? In Matte black?

Pony Wall Edges-

Also use Schluter on the edges of the pony walls? (Not ideal.) Or should bullnose be used there? Ideally the pattern would continue from the pony wall right up to the back wall. Does that mean the pony wall either needs to be 3” or 6” for it to work? Other options?

Niche-

Tiled- again bullnose or schluter?

By the shower head? In a pony wall?

Pony Wall Tops--

For the tops of the pony walls and curb- Tile? Or solid surface? Most likely black. Where should the tile on the pony wall next to the vanity stop? What about under the curb top- tile or same as curb top?

Vanity-

I am thinking a white countertop, sink, backsplash, and side splashes would help the toilet not stand out as the only white thing in the room. Or use same solid surface that is used on pony wall top?

My kiddo really loves color and said he wanted this bathroom. I am thinking about a red vanity for now. And then when he’s older we can paint it white/black/grey.

If you made it all this way- THANK YOU!

(Rough) Pictures of pony wall tops and vanity options-

We are leaning toward the last column.

Hire a kitchen and bath designer. You are attempting to specify some out of industry standard options here, in a darn expensive project. And done pretty clashy choices that need vorrecting. You need a great designer, and the best and most expensive tile installer that exists in your location.

Verbo Thank you for your candor. Could you be more specific as to which choices are clashy?

    A few thoughts:

    - We wanted a black curb and pony wall top but could not find anyone to do it for a reasonable cost. Black on its own is available in 6" widths at Floor & Decor type stores, but not with matching vanity, and that was too wide for our curb and wall. We gave up in the end and did the vanity and curb/top separately in white marble-look quartz and actual marble, respectively. If you are doing multiple bathrooms, though (I think you are?) you can work with a fabricator for that and use materials for multiple baths, so I would try to coordinate the vanity/curb materials (if not the surrounding aesthetic).

    - I would do a neutral colored vanity with popping red accents rather than a red vanity. Less to change later and I think you could get a lot of red in there with knobs, accents, wall color, etc. without committing full-on to a custom red vanity.

    - At GC and tiler's rec, did not tile the front of the pony wall--but we also didn't wrap the tile onto the wall, and it makes sense to if you are going to do that. It you have a good tilesetter, he/she should be able to miter cut the edges to wrap the corner cleanly, and I'd personally prefer that look. Depending on the tile you choose, they may also make trim pieces designed for outside corners.

I like your tile, but it's going to make for a very dark room. I actually really like the variegated blue tile in your rendering--I wonder if you could find something like that to introduce a little variation? If not, I would only take the blue partway up the wall and would then switch to a lighter color from that tile line to go the rest of the way to the ceiling in the shower.

-Niche on the tall side wall or else on the shower head wall.

I like the blue, but at least on my monitor, it doesn't go with the floor tile, which looks like it's leaning brown. Since blue is a cool color you should be leaning gray. I would also not have as much of the blue as you're considering. I think it will just be too much. I also don't like the idea of the red vanity. White or black looks better. The time during which your son will like the red will be over before you know it. Don't stress over the black tile edges - if they can't be done easily you won't miss them. I find myself frequently telling people you can't always fit all of your good ideas into one room. Save some for later. :-)

Ultimately this is an expensive project and you should be at least somewhat concerned about doing something you're still going to like in 20 years. Most people don't remodel their bathrooms anymore frequently than that, and a child shouldn't be making major decisions on finishes in a bathroom. Let him go crazy with a wall color or comforter in his bedroom. But a blue shower stall isn't a bad idea; a lot of people like blue.

Thank you artemis78, kandrewspa, and Helen for your constructive help to my absolute panic post. (Note to self - do not post on Houzz late at night.) Yes artemis78, we are doing 3 bathrooms and have never done renovations more than basics (paint, light fixtures, flooring) - no moving of walls/plumbing/electrical. It's obviously getting to me.

The colors for the tiles was a bit off. I think this one might show them more accurately. The blue is not light but isn't navy either. Slightly darker than medium? The floor is grey, but I didn't realize it until after you, kandrewspa, mentioned brown that it is a warmer grey.

    Tangent -

I ordered this tile- Pixl Electro-Funk Matte Honeycomb in Fog (MTP0.1HEXMOSM)

Received this tile- Crossville Multiplier 2” Hexagon in Matte Grey (MTP02.1HEXMOSM)

I emailed Crossville to see if they were the same tiles or are made at the same place and they said "I am not seeing that." Anybody know if they are made the same place?

The picture below is with the Crossville tiles which are here so we will probably just use them.

They look very similar but there is a little something different about the finish. At certain angles, the Pixl has a very, very slight metallic look (even saying that makes it sound questionable but it is so subtle, you don't even realize it unless you are moving it around in the sun. It just has a little more depth than a plain matte grey tile. But no one will be moving the floor around in the sun, so...)

artemis78 Thanks for the information about the black curb and pony wall top. I hadn't looked into it yet and didn't ever think black would be difficult to find. Hmm...

I also prefer the look of mitered edges. And would prefer for all the edges to be mitered but there are quite a few of them. And have tiled pony wall tops and curb but that seems like leaks waiting to happen, not to mention more miters. We would still have a trim issue for the area above the toilet, which is where the Schulter idea came in (and then ran wild across the tile). I could get the 3X6 size for the half tiles, no cuts. Caulk edge across? Would that stay crisp and clean? I feel like caulk holds dust easily.

I considered tiling that entire wall but it definitely looked like too much blue! I'll have to talk with the tile guy about mitering at least the pony wall edges. If white tiles were above the pony wall, then we could run it up the wall behind the toilet too. No trim needed. That's something to think about.

I was looking for a variegated blue but they all seemed very glossy or more baby blue. If we switched to a variegated tile, I think it would be laid horizontal 1/2 offset.

    Rejected tiles-

Top left would be our next choice.

Bottom left was the only matte blue tile with variety.

"you can't always fit all of your good ideas into one room. Save some for later. :-)"

Great advice! I probably need to put this on a post-it on my computer.

Helen - Houndstooth and red? Do we live in the same state? I am actually surprised that my son didn't choose orange to go with blue. But I am happy with the red - my alma mater from the state next door. And easier to find decor wise.

My parents let us have input in our rooms too. It was nice to feel like my room reflected me. (Not so nice when my newly painted peach walls looked like they were glowing orange - putting back up the curtains helped a lot!)

I agree, the red vanity is pretty out there. I figured it would be so used/loved/abused when he was over the red that it would need to be painted (or even replaced). What are the favorite neutral choices - white w/ black top? white w/ white? black w/ white top?

Using red accessories instead- I found these fun red lights. Could one of them be hung above the vanity instead of a sconce? (With a fan in a can and a vanity light, would there be a reasonable place for one of these fixtures elsewhere?)

Dutton Brown sconces - very fun but a bit more.

Here are some non-red options for vanity light. Any favorites?

Oops, late night crazy posting again!
