Incantation looks correct to me. It has a very unique bloom. It's one of my favorite roses. I don't have DH, so I can't help there. But I'm sure Paul will check in soon.

That is indeed 'Incantation'. Mine disappeared years ago under the slow-moving avalanche of "Burbank's Delight" (aka Himalayan Blackberry), never to be seen again. I'm sure it suffocated.

Hard to say if that's really 'Diablo Hawk' or not. Too soon to tell, but I never saw mine open "magenta' - it was always deep cranberry/garnet-black.

Paul, I am so very sorry to hear the cursed blackberries smothered your Incantation! It’s rather like finding that one of your children has been devoured by something carnivorous. I am shuddering for you. Fortunately, unlike children, roses can be cloned, and RVR has this one of your children in stock for the rose world to grow and preserve.

Diablo Hawk: Hmmmm. Darn Darn! I will keep an eye on it. I need to search for Sheila’s commebts in other threads to recall if her RVR plants were true to their ID. I’d like to post progress to see what you think as my plant matures if that’s okay. Maybe my baby’s next bloom will miraculously be deep, velevety red (she says, never giving up hope).🤞

This is my DH last year, Carol. Not blooming yet this year. This was from RVRs. I wonder if it was just the light exposure on the photo of yours, Carol.

Thank you, Sheila! Unless I’m crazy (which is always up for debate), your DH looks right to my eye. And it sure is pretty! Maybe Paul will comment if he hasn’t already, but I think yours was already verified?

I LOVE Incantation! Thank you Paul and Rogue Vally Roses!!

Incantation is SO pretty! And Wow! The scent of this tiny first bloom on this tiny 4” inch pot rose is very sweet and very powerful. Foliage is 100% clean so far…unlike half the plants my garden this spring.

Do you think this bloom is shaping up to be Diablo Hawk? Or is it too early to tell? Not so much red, but definitely turning purple.

Carol, I don't think Ive ever seen it turn that color, but in this weather, who knows?! My Cecile Brunner is mostly brown, so.....

Here is mine today. I don't know that I've seen DH that purple but it is beautiful.

This is the first bloom in the ground this year. I'll watch for color changes. I have a lot more buds this year. I'll try for a close up of the bloom and buds tomorrow.

Thank you both! I certainly expected a DH color more along the lines of yours, Sheila. As you said, Paul: ”This weather.” This crazy spring—almost summer—weather. Well, I’ll keep updating, and time will tell. The typical garnet color of DH is deeply satisfying, but the purple of this baby sure is nice, too!

@Sheila z8a Rogue Valley OR Thank you! Your DH sure is a magnificent thing! Mine is so magenta compared to yours, but the weather up here in my region of Oregon…. I love that deep, garnet, red velvet coloring of yours! One of my favorites along with purple. I’ll see if my DH produces another bloom. I usually disbud bands after the initial ID bloom, but this one looks pretty sturdy, and I suspect I won’t get a satisfactory ID until I see a bloom in different conditions. Carol

Thank you all for your feedback earlier this year. Here’s an update on my Diablo Hawk’s color. After some interesting shades during my cold, wet spring, DH’s bloom now looks like the real deal, yes? 🎉 Dark, sensuous, velvety red even in the height of summer. Just look at that color and texture. Wow! The foliage is really healthy, too. Oh, and fragrance? Check! I LOVE THIS ROSE! Carol

My baby Incantation (a band delivered this spring) is growing fast AND trying to bloom continuously. I remove most of the buds, but every once in awhile, I just have to let one open! You can see the temptation…which rhymes with Incantation. Carol

Hi, Monarda. My Diablo Hawk is pretty much a shrub. Still young and small, though. Maybe Sheila’s is more mature, and she’ll have better feedback. Carol
