petal count - 60-70 (that includes the tiny ones on the inside)

bloom size - medium

scent - very little

height - about 5 foot + (I did recently cut down the main large central stem back to the height of the rest of it as it was towering about at 6 + feet)

Thanks for the nice comments. yeh its definitely our best rose. I have posted it on a few other forums and people think it may be Buff Beauty from David Austin. I think they could be right based on the pics on their website plus its a monster of a shrub rose and it says on their website ’very large shrub rose’. ken_adria - it looks very different when it first open in colour and appearance compared to when its fully out.

It does look like Buff Beauty, which is not an Austin, but a hybrid musk from Bental, 1939. Hybrid musks are great roses. I grow Ballerina, and Felicia and Cornelia are popular. Diane

Looks like 'Crocus Rose' to me, especially the whole bush shot.

Yours looks like Austin Crocus rose (light scent). Buff Beauty (strong tea scent) blooms are more yellow and fades to white. Crocus rose is stable beige like your rose. Check on below links for previous pics. of Crocus rose:

Thanks guys. @Diane Brakefield is this Austin rose different from the crocus one then:

What is a hybrid musk and is this DA one not a hybrid musk then?

yeh maybe its the crocus one. I must say the singlw shot pic on teh above DA link and also the one with the purple clematis look like my rose - but then the other pics are too yellow.

Austin does sell some roses that are not "Austin Roses", hybridized by the Austin company. Crocus Rose is an Austin rose. Buff Beauty is a hybrid musk, sold by Austin, but not an Austin rose. Got it? Diane

Beautiful rose! In case they are helpful, here are some photos of my Hybrid Musk ’Buff Beauty’ for comparison. Carol

That isn't 'Buff Beauty' - the foliage is too glossy and there are far too few buds on a stem to be 'Buff Beauty', not to mention that 'Buff Beauty' has a very powerful, rich fragrance. Also, 'Buff Beauty's foliage is more blue-green than bright grassy green.

Also, 'Buff Beauty' is very horizontal in habit. Mine was typically 7 or 8 feet wide and always less than 5 feet tall.

I think your rose is something much more modern. Not likely an Austin either, since Austin didn't release roses with little-to-no scent.

Carol - GASP!!! Love your Buff Beauty!!

Yeh great rose Carol! @User are you saying mine isn’t Buff Beauty? Both the buff beauty sold by crocus and David Austin say the fragnance is mild so I’m confused. My definitely has very little scent. Thanks

@Alfie (North London, UK) Correct. I don't believe your rose is 'Buff Beauty'. It looks like one of Austin's own hybrids. Your rose has glossy "grass green" foliage, which is not a match for 'Buff Beauty'. The only thing similar is the color of the bloom, otherwise there's very little about your plant that resembles 'Buff Beauty', which is a very distinct plant in architecture and style. Your rose shows none of the arching horizontal habit of 'Buff Beauty', and it is presenting only small clusters of blooms on the branches, whereas 'Buff Beauty' produces copious clusters, even on the smaller laterals. Also diagnostic with 'Buff Beauty'; the buds tend to be very pubescent (soft white "fur" covering them) and I suspect your rose does not show that trait.

For me, 'Buff Beauty' had a strong fragrance, but it was in the "Tea" family of fragrances, which is one that many people barely detect. I seem to be very receptive to that fragrance. Many people can't smell it, so they find many of these types only mildly fragrant.

Thanks @User - Buff Beauty sounds incredible. will have to get one. I absolutely love scented roses. Any place you would recommend to get one?

Burling (Burlington Roses in Visalia) sells it, i believe. ask her.

The rose looks like a Kordes rose to me. It could also be the Crocus rose even tho I have never seen an Austin in my garden with that extreme glossy foliage. The blooms do look very similar. The extreme foliage glossiness, the thorns and the low scent coupled with the perfect foliage makes me think of Kordes. Where are you located Alfie? There is absolutely no Austin rose that would have that perfect shiny black spot free foliage in the southeastern USA right now.

what ever you have it is a wonderful rose.

Thanks. I live near London. Those Kordes roses look nice!

I have no idea what it is, but the first thing that struck me was the incredible substance of the petals, based on your pics! If you ever get closer to an ID, that trait might help narrow it down a bit. Whatever it is, it is gorgeous :-D

    @Alfie (North London, UK)

I 100% agree your rose is not Buff Beauty. My first thoughts are Austin‘s Crocus Rose, like several others mentioned, or something Kordes, as Dianela mentioned. Depending on the shot, I bounce between Crocus Rose and something Kordes. At the moment I am leaning toward Crocus Rose. Crocus Rose comes from a line of Noisette and Hybrid Musk roses. BB may even be in Crocus’ ancestry. Your rose is very pretty, whatever its ID! I do HIGHLY recommend Buff Beauty if you have the space for it. I have grown BB for ages—at my former garden and my current one. Once it matures, it’s a fantastic performer with a lovely sweet Tea fragrance. The golden buttery buff color show is a sight to behold! I grow BB next to another Hybrid Musk rose, Penelope, and their scents perfume my side garden. Carol

P.S. @User This spring, I have really been noticing and curious about the fur on BB’s buds.

Thanks for this. Yes it dows look a bit like the crocus - it is at least 5 foot high though and it says crocus is a medium rose. yeh I’m definitely getting a hybid musk as they look amazing. either BB or felicia looks nice.

Crocus Rose is a good guess— it checks the color and height boxes (although it can get much larger than that) but the bloom form and foliage doesn’t match. CR has smaller and less glossy foliage than that. Maybe a Kordes?

This is my what I believe to be Crocus Rose. I lost the tag and it was between Moonlight in Paris and Crocus Rose. To me this rose does not look like Alfie's.

Here are some more pictures as the flowers have matured and gone alot whiter with this hot weather in London.

Lion's fairy tale crossed my mind too.

I think you've nailed it with Lyons fairytale. I was wondering if you were in England with your beautiful basket fencing.

What about something like Angel Veranda?

Thanks people. This pic I found online looking for pics for Lyons Fairytale:

it looks identical to my rose! @Vaporvac Z6-OhioRiverValley - thanks yeh we love hazel fencing - I take it that fencing isn‘t as common in the US then?

no, unfortunately. Ive considered weaving it myself for a potager area, but that probably wont be happening anytime soon.

I think Diane nailed it with Lion's Fairy Tale. I just looked at all of the pics of it on HMF, and many (not all) showed the same unique substance to the petals that I noticed from your pics. Kudos to Diane for her great sleuthing :-D

Yes Diane did very well! I asked it on another great forum and no/one managed to get that.

    Good going, Diane! :) :)

Great call, Diane! And beautiful photos. i didnt think I liked yellow, but these are lovely!

    Bingo Diane!

Thanks, everyone. Identifying this rose is more rewarding than growing roses this awful spring. Diane
