Backplash help - subway tile design

Hi, i need help with my kitchen backsplash.

I fell in love with a 2x20 subway tile in white and 2x10 in gray.
(The gray 2x20 is sold out).

Can I mix both sizes ? 2x20 in white and 2x10 in gray?

I feel like it can be fun and interesting, but I have no clue how to design a lay out. Is there anyone here who may be interested in mocking something up? I’ll compensate 😂😂😂

Multicolored long skinny backsplash tile is a dated look by 10 years. Mixed-size tile in a backsplash is also as dated. If you want to have the long skinny tile, pick one color and one size. So many manufacturers make them, you can find a color you like.

I suggest you find something in a very pale color that is not gray and definitely not white. Your kitchen is extremely monochromatic. It looks like a black-and-white photo. There is literally no color besides white and gray anywhere in your kitchen. A very pale blue or green would add some life.

I love M Miller’s first picture if you really want a subway style tile. I’m not opposed to white tile despite the all white kitchen but would use a soft colored grout like Mapei Frost (very light silvery grey). You have lots of clean straight lines in your kitchen so how about a different shaped tile? Modwalls.com Kiln ceramic collection has fabulous tile shapes. Minnow is gorgeous in a pale color or would also look good in white with colored grout. If you want a sharper line their Chevron tile is also gorgeous. That site is fun because they have 103 colors to choose from. Will attach a few pics, last one being my almost done kitchen so you can see what the Mapei Frost grout looks like with a matte white tile. Please ignore the floating shelf styling, I was just throwing some base pieces up to see what colors/textures I want up there. Good luck!

I would actually prefer a fun shaped tile, but I can’t seem to find any in the $10sf range 😢

This is a summer home project that started with renovating a bathroom and snowballed into a new kitchen. My husband put his foot down on a fancy backsplash lol

Also, I originally thought I would do a bold color. However, i haven’t really adopted a particular color in the house yet and was scared to commit.

Also, the kitchen is on the 2nd level of a split foyer so the green treetops shine through the windows . Once spring rolled around , I thought maybe to just keep the kitchen neutral.

    What is your flooring?

You sound like someone who might like Bedrosians Cloe ”white’ subway tile, which are 2x8” with mulitple white/gray tones per case. Many of us have these even in white kitchens (myself included), but we found ways to use flooring and accents to avoid monochrmatic overload. Good luck.

Chuckled when I read your comment about fancy tile. My hubby nixed several for our kitchen, he wanted only subway. I had another tile selected and happened upon this elongated matte white subway. I said I’d return the other stuff on 2 conditions, the first being that we use the matte white and the second that it had to be a horizontal stack.

I love thought of a green tile in light of your tree top view, it would be gorgeous. The green could be muted if you don’t want a bold color. You could get a smaller subway shape but do a vertical stack. If you have a Floor and Decor nearby check them out, they have scads of tiles at reasonable prices. Sometimes the hubs just need a gentle but sizeable push in the right direction… 😂 Post pics when you’re done, I’m sure it will be gorgeous!

Here is a great link with subway tile patterns and pics of each. https://www.tileclub.com/blogs/news/subway-tile-patterns-and-interior-design-inspiration. See if you’re drawn to any of them or to any of the colors. If you pick a more interesting pattern (basketweave, 90 degree herringbone) then you could get away the white subway/colored grout route. If you’re feeling more adventurous go with a color😁. Be bold if it’s a summer home!

Thank You ! I’m going to check them all out.

I happen to have gone bold in my winter home so I wasn’t sure it should do it again lol I have a navy stained wood kitchen with fuschia counter

I would stick with a white or gray subway tile. Pick one but don’t mix the two. You can always add color through accessories, plants, towels, etc. Then when you get tired of that color it’s not a huge expense to change a few accessories. Love the floor tile, btw. Good luck!

We might suggest using only one of the tiles. Perhaps use the white with a grey grout?

It might be a good idea to use only one size of the backsplash. Here are just a few ideas from kitchen designs we have done for our clients:
