I live in the woods. ALL my hostas are in shade with virtually no direct sun. They all do fine. They are first and foremost a shade loving plant.

the more white.. the less chlorophyll so in the extreme.. the darker it is.. the less white if you want vigor ..

however.. based on the pic you provided.. i suspect that your spot isnt really what we would call heavy dark shade ... especially if there is blue sky above ..

imo.. plant whichever one you want.. and dont worry about it... and move it if it doesnt work out for whatever reason..

supposed to be 100 here today in my MI ... i dont recommend moving anything right now..

Gardengal, same here. I expect after I clear some buckthorn I will get dappled light but now it seems pretty shady. It is the spot behind current bed.

I am getting about dozen plants, mostly replacement what did not survive the move.

I lost 5ft wide Montana Aureomarginata, I guess it will need bit more sun?

Ken, what about yellows? Any that will be ok?

I am planning to go to LOTG in a few weeks because I want some memory Giantland specimen from Jeff introductions. So am sure something will jump into my cart.

I usually try to throw yellows in shady spots. Some do well and some don't get or stay as yellow. I'd stick with the lutescent varieties. Liberty looks quite nice wherever you put it.

Off the top of your head, any lutescent varieties you suggest? Between my potted hostas needed to be placed and replacement coming I should fill this bed nicely but couple of anchors to stand out I sure could use.

Well, I actually don't have many very shady spots and I'm still relatively new to this game. I tried City Lights but the shade and invasive maple tree roots despite the spin out bag put this experience on hold. I rescued it a couple years ago so this year I might actually get to see what I'm hoping for. Last year it was a bit underwhelming.

I'm guessing you want a large one if it's going to be an anchor. Sum and Substance and its kin really brighten up the shade. Here's Winter Snow today after only a couple years in what may be the shadiest part of my garden. North side of house with JM blocking any western sun and trees (among other things) blocking things from the East. It gets a sliver of sunlight around noon before the house blocks it.

I really like Yosemite Valley. Mine gets a good shot of mid-morning sun and some may think it gets too bright. It should be less so in shade, but still turn yellow - I think lutescence depends on heat, not light. Although, I'm sure the light helps.

Night Shift is another one I have in shade but as you can see it does get dappled sun. It does go yellow early as this pic from today shows.

Enduring Beacon above it makes a nice smaller yellow.

I also love Krugerrand, but mine gets quite a bit of sun for a Hosta.

On a slightly different approach, you might try a nice frosty green like Lakeside Frosted Mint, L. Old Smokey or Foxfire Irish Moon. Or a frosty yellow like Fog light or Chorus Girl:

Most of these may be tricky to find, so you'll have to go on what's available. I don't grow these, but they have a great rep and I've seen them around: Key West, Coast to Coast . . . the list is practically endless. I wonder how some of the sunny wonders like Sun Power or Squash Casserole would do in the shade?

Since you're going to LOTG (they're back in business?) You might want to check out Giantland Irish Mist (and post a pic of one of their giant ones). Mine is very shady, but it may get more interesting with some sun.

I like orange marmalade; it’s a good grower for me as long as it is shady.

Littlebug, it’s interesting, because Orange Marmalade is on the Sun Tolerant list…..however mine isn’t doing so well in sun…….

I have decent amount of the ones you mentioned and loved seeing your Nightshift. I do not know yet if mine survived and am trying to figure it out, it was young. Quite a few took set back during transplant. It so helps to see mature one!

Out of what I got now to move is replacement of Montana Aureomarginata, Neat and Tidy, Ripped, Lakeside Uh huh, Her eyes were blue, Heatwave and additional Laura and Darrel.

Additionally I have Gabriel wings coming and Valley Himitsu about which am super excited. Karin and Saja got me fall in love with Valleys...

Potted hostas did not do that great overwinter and losses were bigger than I want to keep going so am planning to get them in the ground as much as I can including War Paint.

I probably will give War paint premium location somewhere else though...scared...

Debra, I love seeing your Giantland collection and am truly sad that LOTG lost Jeff, I wish new owners best luck... They not open for online sales but am hoping to go there during open house day... I could not find Chiquita this spring which I got from there and will get something from GL collection as memories of Jeff....

I miss Gary like he was a relative, he was such a presence on line with his stories and kindness... Happy to say that last order from Gary has survived, house remodeling has proved far more extensive than I thought so I basically did not see garden last year besides watering...

Littlebug, I would never think of OM as shady plant, as Ken was mentioning that much brightness should not grow well in shade, sure will give it a try!

It is really helpful to see all of your hosta pics specially not fully mature ones. HL is great but now I need to figure out which is which by immature state, my transplanting move set some back, disappeared others and interesting doubled up some others...

Lucky guys going to LOTG since they can't do mail order this year. Hope that changes next season but I totally understand that taking over Jeff's business has to be so daunting for his daughter and her partner. I keep moving Linda Sue into deeper shade since it has literally fried early in the year in areas with even dappled sun. But it's a sport of Frances Williams which I didn't know when I got it from Van Wade years ago. My first hosta Frances Wi8lliams lives under a large magnolia in deep shade but I don't know why anyone would buy that hosta or any of "her" sports since they fry in any sunlight in my yard. I also have some Orange Marmalade in the shade as well as some of Monty Carlson's hostas, he's from Minnesota, his Minnesota Wild, Ruffed Up, Blue Cascade, and Sunfish do very well in a shady area that I've also put epimedium in and a bunch of hellebores--nothing stops them. Pineapple Upside Down Cake also has issues with sunlight in my yard. My Designer Genes gets dappled late afternoon sun and does well.

Miles, I gifted FW to someone's very shady corner years back, just could not stand those spots. I like Minnesota creations, and Ruffed up looks real cool!

Gardens beds getting fuller. I planted some of newly arrived ones as well as moved my potted blue ones in. Also moved older Journeys end, it is quite vigorous for me hopefully it will do well in more shade.

And somehow Van Wade grew Linda Sue in full sun, and it looked amazing. Maybe it needs to fry a few years before it looks good. It probably gets tons of water. And the leaves on it are so thick.

I'm heading to Chicago next week, maybe a trip to LoTG is in order. Morton Arb is on the agenda. Not sure how much plant stuff I can cram into our visit, but I'm trying.

Weather should be more merciful next week. Anderson Japanese gardens are fun too if you have not been there.

You have a lot of great input here. I would like to add that in my shadiest corner I have transplanted older establised hosta. In my experience hosta grow more slowly in shade and the shady corners are where the critters like to hang out so small single eye new plants may not flourish.

Beverly, I agree. Hoping as my time permits I will get rid of buckthorn surrounding fence which hopefully open up some light.

I am trying not to feel overwhelmed by amount of work I got myself into 😆

On a good note previous owners used this area as a compost zone so this is best seat in town...
