Just make a clean cut to remove the broken part and all will be fine, birch trees really heal up and grow quickly!

I assume river birch is the same way, but once betula pendula gets going they grow FAST

fast and its real close to the house ....

why is it still staked ...... or was that after the storm??? .. trees need to blow in the wind.. its what makes them able to cope with the wind.. rather than fighting our ideas of staking

im seriously thinking of recommending that in fall.. just after dormancy... you dig the darn thing up.. and move it 10 to 15 feet from your house ...

btw .... after the cut.. you might need to prune for a few years.. to get it back into a shape you prefer ... you wont need the 3 to 5 branches to appear due to your pruning cut ..
