The leaves might have just been a bit too far gone to recover. If the plant is alive and you take good care of it, chances are it will be fine.

Agreed. Perhaps the box was subjected to a period of sufficient heat to damage the foliage, hopefully not enough to harm the actual plant. The new shoot was under soil, therefore insulated from the worst of it. I'd leave the wilted foliage alone. The plant will shed them when it's ready. Until then, as long as they are green, they MAY actually feed the plant a bit and they definitely provide shade for the canes. Treat it well and let it show you what it wants to do. You should be OK.

Ditto-ing Magpie. Sometimes plant shock doesn’t play out for awhile, so the wilt is delayed. If the cane(s) with the wilted leaves is green, I’d leave it. You could remove the leaves if they are toast anyway. Your fresh green shoot is great news! I suspect Umbra is as tough as the other Barden Gallicas, and Gallicas in general, and with your good care, Umbra will continue to mature and thrive. Carol

Thanks everybody for your responses! The leaves continue to wilt and are starting to dry out, so I think they'll probably fall off. But the can looks good, I don't see any sign of shriveling, and there is that beautiful hidden new shoot! So I'm cautiously hopeful ...

If it makes you feel better, I've had bands come with spider mites, which quickly developed into a gross amount of them and they ruined the foliage on my teeny baby rose. I had to pull all the foliage off and I'm sure it was stressed, but it recovered and did well despite its beginning. As long as the rose is decently vigorous there's a good chance that losing the foliage is just a minor setback and the rose will recover just fine. Being a gallica, I'd expect it to be tough enough to shrug this off. Good luck with it 🤞

Just wanted to give you all an update on my Umbra. All of the leaves ultimately dried up and fell off, but it has started putting out beautiful, fresh new leaves! The big can still looks plump and green. The baby cane that I discovered when repotting has not yet emerged, but judging by how long it took for the new leaves to start coming in, I think the plant is just taking time. So, I'm pretty relieved! Now, here's hoping it really is Umbra, which I guess I won't know til it blooms (hopefully) next spring. Thanks so much to all of you for your advice and support!!
