Cedar or asphalt what? Maybe this will help you express your dilemma better so you can get help.

My father-in-law had a cedar roof and he loved his they last a long time but if you pay good money and get the longest life on the asphalt roof you could get those asphalt shingles whatever one you prefer they both would look nice

If you go with shingles I would recommend an architectural shingle that has more thickness.

I have GAF timberline shingles and I’ve been extremely happy with them. I don’t know what kind of weather you get in your part of the world but that might be a consideration. In terms of high winds etc. Plus if you have any repairs done you can pretty much get your shingles to match exactly (if you save a bundle) whereas with cedar repairs are going to show for a while. Personally for the price I would take the 75 grand and put it somewhere else where you can enjoy it.

I think an asphalt is a good option. It is easier to implement and cheaper. I wanted to do the same for my house, and I hired paveallohio.com for this purpose. The job was done quickly, and I love the way it looks. Moreover, cedar is more vulnerable to any changes, including wet weather, etc., which can make it feel less attractive with a spin of time. If you are not going to be there forever, take a look at the other houses on your street and in your neighborhood. If you would be the only asphalt roof on the street (among slate and cedar, for example), that might affect your home’s value in a negative way. However, if you plan to be there forever, I’d get the cedar (even if all the other houses are asphalt) if that makes you happier.

I ended up putting on an asphalt roof but opted for copper gutters . I just couldn’t justify the extra cost for cedar . My extra cedar shingles also ended up being much more than budgeted . I guess it’s the increase in cedar pricing . See a picture of the new roof . No gutters yet and still under construction with missing windows etc ( another delay ) but very happy with roof decision and overall construction
