The bold black and stark white are too harsh for the tile, and the feather thing in the corner is not necessary and appears a chairside table jammed in a tight corner for what purpose? Keys? Use hooks or a shallow shelf.

Start over with a 4 x 6 rug......make certain the doors clear it.

We can't tell anything from your picture beyond that

Everything Jan said, plus a warmer wall color would work better with the floor tile.

The angel is so bad I am not sure but the height of the wire table also speaks to it's lack of function. Right now it's just a thing that is taking up visual space in a small area. The two tones of gray walls with the brown tone floor are duking it out.

What does the chandelier look like? I’m
with you, maybe it can be salvaged by bringing more elements in to tie it together. A cabinet by the door with warm wood tones to relate to the tile instead of the black metal piece, and an indoor/outdoor rug on the patio will break up some of the cold gray concrete. Jan’s rug above is a good example.

Oops my mistake. Moving to a better monitor, I just realized that is carpet, not concrete in the adjacent area.

Hmm. I don’t think this space can be salvaged with the items you have here. Round rugs rarely work anywhere, and the feather thing and table don’t seem to be serving any purpose. Can you post a few more photos from different vantage points? The pics you’ve given us are not very helpful. I agree that a warmer wall color would work with the floor better.

The stark white of the zebra stripe rug is very much fighting the warm beige of the floor. You can find zebra stripe rugs in black/beige or dark brown/beige, and I think those would work better in this space (also agree with previous posters that I would look for a square of rectangular rug). The warmer tones of a leopard print rug might work better here and still suit the glam look you are going for.

A rug(not round) and artwork is all that's needed from what you're showing.

You need a rug with warm and cool tones in it, to tie in the walls, adjacent carpet, and beige tile floor together. I agree with others that a round rug isn't the best shape for the space. Also agree that the round stand/feather decor in the corner should be removed. If you post the chandelier that you have ordered, and some direction of the style you like, we can offer better ideas for the entryway...

Sometimes rugs come in multiple colorways. Does this come in off-white and brown instead of bright white and black?

So amazing - all of you

I wouldnt have done a round carpet, i would have gotten something square. It makes, to me, more visual sense. Its all about trial and error, lol I think you have a great space to work with tho.

The advice that you have been given regarding the rug is spot on. But I appreciate that this is a difficult space to work with. Lots of doors, and very little wall space. So…accept that! You really don’t have space for a large, or even small(!), console. I can’t see what is to the left of your staircase. If there is a wall there, perhaps you do have a small wall against which you might be able to hang a shelf or place a very narrow console with a tall, narrow piece of art. Stand in the room across from the steps (with the french doors) and take another photo of this space, please.

Not the right rug - too much contrast with the floor tiles and the pattern is too loud. I would do wall paper in here to make a statement and since you don;t seem to have a lot of wall space.

@ptreckel clearly i have regressed as far as the entryway goes - but i had an epiphany at lunch - i want my house to be "Cruella de Vil meets glam meets Queen of Hearts" (alice in wonderland) i love animal print (not dalmation) - big colors, chandeliers,

random items, i think it will be more forgiving as well.... would love any suggestions, thank you!!!

What do you think about animal print wallpaper instead of a rug?

And is this rug sufficiently Queen of Hearts for you? Sorry for the rendering; the imaging tool apparently didn't process the bit of floor behind the door as being floor.

5x8, so you'd better be certain of your measurements baseboard to baseboard. There's also a 4x6.

@cawaps ah i love this!! and would love to do the wallpaper - is that something I can do? my memories of wallpaper imply a professional always had to be hired? i'd love to learn how to do so myself

I think if the white was an ivory, it would be better. The white is too striking.

    Cruella my dear,

Buy a REAL hide. No I'm not kidding. Buy a brown zebra........... you need the irregular shape, Bonus? You can trim them with a good scissors.

I've never tried to wallpaper anything so I can't give any first-person advice. I know that some people DIY walpaper, usually the peel-and-stick variety. Given how much trouble I have using scotch tape and putting on band-aids, I would probably be terrible at it, but you may be handier than me (or have a handy assistant).

With the tile and stair treads, you could do something like this. Just not black/white.

  • PRO

The gray color of your walls seems to clash with the earthy tone of your tile. So, might suggest that you change the tile or get a rug large enough to cover most of the tile. I agree with other posters - the bold zebra stripe rug doesn't fit well. Perhaps something in a more classic oriental design would work better. Good luck!

@Kat M ohhh yes i love this!!! how would i go about doing it though?!

    @JAN MOYER done! :)

Personally, I would hit a good size flooring/wallpaper store and get help finding the one you want and having it installed. The wallpaper installation will be complicated with all the doors and it’s your entryway. You want it to be a really nice first impression. Have fun with it! Should be fabulous.

If doing a hide on the floor? Stick to a simple grass cloth. : ) I beg.

okay so this would prob be my dream - with a different chandelier and potential splash of zebra

but not sure how i'd begin to achieve this :/

    better angle? @janmoyer

    @ptreckel better angle ?

A revealing angle. Before you wind yourself up over the entry, spend money to add hardwood as your stair, to the adjacent room . Choose a new tile for the floor.

You're in suburbia, and your inspo is urbane ..........over the top Park Avenue : )

Show us that adjacent room.......and remember you have to interpret any inspo. A neutral grass cloth or a vivid green.....the zebra hide and a lot of ART on the walls. Paint the doors a WARM black. The paper? Has to go UP the stair as well and grass cloth isn't a diy paper

Add a gilded flush mount light

Changing the floor tile will be expensive and disruptive. What you have is neutral and looks to be in good condition.

Far cheaper would be to repaint the walls to a warm color. Unfortunately, many people followed the grey craze, without considering their flooring, trim, cabinets, etc. To my eye, that is the issue here: cool colored walls with a warm colored floor. A warm off-white would be a much better starting point.

I’d ensure the foyer is coordinated to the adjacent spaces, so there is a natural progression into your home. Can you provide a picture of your living room, which may help with a look you hadn’t thought of. Less is more done right.

I’d install a semi-flush light, a square rug (try taping out) will help ground and balance. Creamy white walls, accessorized with black (including interior door), feeling like below without table of course.

You said you had ordered a chandelier? Has it come yet? Dare we ask to see a photo of it???

    last modified: 4 years ago

@JAN MOYER here is the chandelier - the rest is undecided - i like the art deco + 'dark glam' idea maybe black/white geometric with an accent color....red.....

loved the looks of these... but not sure about committing to zebra print all the way up my stairways?

agh! i'm not sure which is most "do-able" - i know i'm clearly attracted to the darker colors, zebra on either the wall or the floor, the gold, the mirrors, the contrast, the pop of red or pink? i'm trying to envision this in my obviously much smaller foyer that won't look like any of these.... i just don't have the gift that the people here do?!

also, now very much leaning towards this chandelier instead

is there someone I can pay that can help - virtually, just by looking at these pictures with all the dimensions?!

You can't put zebra on the floor, and zebra on the walls and didn't you decide the floor for that? .

You can't hang a crystal chandelier that EVERY door will bang upon opening, or one you will hit your head on passing under..

Every light you look at online, has dimensions. Length, width.....it has a spec sheet that provides that info. You get a tape measure and check the ceiling height. Door heights.

You've been asked about adjacent spaces....what's in the rest of the house. What's the flavor ? We don't know, you're just showing us a small hallway. An entry is an announcement...... a suggestion of what is to come. Or a summary in a way, that makes sense with all you've ALREADY done, assuming you save that entry to decorate last. Forgive us for thinking every inspo you provide is over the top for the house and entry you have. There are many miles between blah and meh!!......and a Hollywood Hills 20 million glam pad look, likely inappropriate for the home you are in, and perhaps for the rooms to which it leads.

I gave you one, ......... plain grass cloth, hide on the floor, painted doors black, a flush to ceiling light.

There are a thousand more ways. ......but the point is what would you expect to find in the "beyond" in any of these below? To what would they lead? And to what and where does yours lead?

@JAN MOYER which is why i said "zebra on either the wall or the floor" - as in one OR the other. I have taken pictures of all adjacent spaces - you're right, it's a sign of what is to come - which is a Queen of Hearts meets Cruella in the dark - i just need help with this starting point first. I LOVE over the top, and will never be someone that follows the rules - regardless of where/what is deemed appropriate for the area i live in. Thank you for the suggestions.

i plan on doing "art galleries" alternating with "mirror galleries" on the walls of the stairwells leading up - crazy looking, obscurely sized, alternating colors, etc. It will follow no rules

But. You have other rooms as of now? They have WHAT in them? Something, nothing ? I see only carpet in the room beyond, who knows what lurks up the stair?

You can have whatever you want, no matter where you live and as long as you can pay for it.

If I wanted to "Cruella" the house? I'd get a designer on my site. Or spin forever in this method. Ten thousand comments later? Is probably what will happen. Plan your rooms, plan your spend. Prioritize.....
