Help with kitchen layout - Fridge too far?

last modified: 4 years ago

We are redoing our kitchen. I have come up with 2 designs. One involves moving major plumbing and electrical and one involves not so much. We have a basement so it's not a huge deal but I don't mess with 220 so that's def a hire out. We are going from a very small 4 total-ish cabinets and a 21" sink to the attached designs. The sink is currently on the wall that has the peninsula in the design . We would just move the sink down and keep the fridge on the same wall and stove would stay where it's at. But I feel like the is too far from the sink and "less" of a triangle. There isn't much else we can do short of taking out walls and that's engineers and all kinds of fun stuff. The wall at the end is coming down. and please excuse my junky kitchen.

3D projections are very hard to critique or work with. I suggest you post some measured floorplans. Include one of the existing layout too. You'll get better help.

I added some additional pics :)

A couple things to think about:

    • what will you do with the space between the proposed peninsula and the wall?
    • how will people access the kitchen from the wrong side of the peninsula? It appears that there is only 16.25" between end of peninsula and wall.
    • What is it about the current galley layout that doesn't work?
    • to know if your fridge/stove/sink triangle is too big, measure between each of them. None should be more than 9' from either of the others

To the right of the sink (in proposal) is an open wall to new dining area/formal LR. The other end is a EIK, which we would prob make a "keeping room". Current galley style is fine with the DR wall out and extended cabinet run. Otherwise, my camera makes it look big but it's about 8 feet in length. Our main level is kitchen/dining and LR and I'd like to repurpose some of it to a kitchen I can actually store appliances in! I just don't love it the way it is now. Also here is a pic of the opening to LR and other end (EIK)

Galley kitchens are my very favorite. What do you dislike about the current kitchen? I think I'd simply change to stainless appliances and get a new countertop. Your cabinets look great and are not a really dated style. Perhaps adding rollout shelves behind the doors to the lowers on the left would add more accessible storage for you. Look into Ruggable for some great washable rugs to add just the right amount of color/pattern/texture. Upgrade the ceiling light and add LEDs under all the uppers, plus new hardware and you'll have a super kitchen with half the headaches; no floor removal, plumbing or electric adjustments. It will give you the opportunity for some great upgrades to transform the space with little pain.

My main goal is more cabinets! My kitchen doesn't have to be huge or even overly nice really. I want more storage. I'm personally not a fan of sinks on the wall so I've been looking for a new solution since we bought the house a yr ago. We bought in this crazy market so not a lot of choice and I am looking to make it something I enjoy.

Could you please post a sketch of the entire floor the Kitchen is on. Show all interior & exterior doors and label the rooms.

Showing the floor plan as is and understanding what you want to change is the easiest way for us to help you.

To answer your question: no, the fridge won’t be too far IMO. Mine is about 10’ or so from my sink and 19’ from the range and it’s fine. I get out what I need for prep and prefer to have counter space and storage close at hand.

Agree - it's not too far. Whatever you do make sure the cabinets surrounding the fridge are of the depth required to cover the sides of a full-size fridge. Also I would want my sink centered under the window - put the dishwasher under the side cabinet to the left of the sink and move the sink over.
