The overloaded couch room above? Doesn't even have a tv......: )

How many people do you need to seat? You really aren’t getting many more than 4 per sectional shown. As JAN MOYER suggests, take a photo of your space and submit a floor plan with dimensions. List needs/wants (they aren’t necessarily the same!), tell us something about your style. Trust me…you will get suggestions!

Thanks. Here it is, two different ways. 8x 10 rug gives off weird angles and gaps but if I use the 9x12 it’s almost in the kitchen walkway, same if I move the couch further over and put the tv on the wall. This feels really closed off and all pushed over to the stair side creating another weird gap by the windows. Moving the couch towards the fireplace also creates a weird sized gap on the small arch wall behind the couch. Size: 10ft x 11ft small arched wall is 4ft.

Wants: comfortable seating for at least two small families, a more open feel than a closed off one. Also want to add that in between the stairs and the kitchen island is the natural walkway from the front door so that cant really be blocked. thanks again

IMO forget the sectional poor choice for good seating start by getting 2 good sized sofas and putting the TV on the wall to the left with a nice good sized console under it forget the rug until you have all the furniture in the space and yes a to scale plan is really a must and we do need to know how many people need to sit in this space regualrily and also is the the only space for the TV since I hate TV in my LR and avoid it if at all possible

I’m going against the crowd here but i like the sample solution above. the only thing i question is do You really need the TV in the LR? That throws off the room for me. Having a corner fireplace is difficult and i think the designer found a great solution but there is no tv in that room.

Thanks. Submitted my photos, wants and dimensions above now. Husband says the tv stays 😂 I’ve tried it on both the wall and above fireplace. Still open to moving it again but I don’t mind it above the fireplace if I’m totally honest.

Here is my suggestion. Leaving the rug that you have in front of the fireplace at that angle, move the sectional so that it is facing the fireplace, with its back angled between the stairs and the kitchen. I would suggest a console behind the sectional so that a lamp could be placed there. Your two chairs with the high backs don’t look terribly inviting. Instead, perhaps two swivel chairs placed to the right of the fireplace and in front of the window with a small table between them. And two more, non matching chairs against the stair wall. Keep the tv on the one solid wall that you have. A coffee table in front of your sectional. You might place two small ottomans, if you have room, in front of the fireplace. Or tucked under the console behind the sectional. This way, if you can get three on the sectional, four in the chairs, and two on the two ottomans… you have seating for 9. I don’t know if that is needed all the time, but….

I’m not one that dislikes tv’s above a mantel however in your situation I feel it will be too high for comfortsble viewing. Perhaps it’s different in person than what the photo shows but it appears you’ll be craning your neck like being in the first row of a movie theater

Go to a carpet retailer and have a piece of 12’ wide carpet cut to go with all the angles. They will bind it for you.

The sofa should be opposite the tv and put the 2 chairs perpendicular to the sofa. Not sure if the console table works in this room, will it fit on the wall with the cut out?

My parents had a similar home a long time ago and they made this room the dining room!

If you want to keep the sectional where it is run the short end of the carpet so it comes out from the fireplace. What is wrong with this arrangement is that the carpet and sectional are fighting each other in terms of defining shape of the space. You could also try a round carpet.

I agree that the TV over the fireplace in this instance seems too high for comfortable viewing. I suggest putting the TV on the wall to the left of the fireplace. You could consider a Samsung Frame TV. When off, it can display art or family photos, and can be enhanced with picture frame molding to make it look even more like a framed piece.

I suggest you put the rug decision last on the list. Figure out the furniture (big ottomans work great as coffee tables, and provide extra seating when needed - kids and pets love to lounge on them, too), then do as Tootsie suggested and get a piece of carpet custom cut and bound. They can do any shape - you're not limited to rectangles - and you have the whole carpet store to choose from, unlike the premade 9x12, etc. rugs.

If you want help..........put some bold ink and the actual INCHES on that sketch. . How long is the stair wall. The window wall? How wide is the fire wall......what is the length of the room? How many inches from front edge of island to tv wall ? How many inches from island to the cut out wall? How long is the sectional, sofa section and chaise ? How long is the console with the photos on it? The only thing that you told us size? The 8 x 10 rug.

Do INCHES as the picture below. Then go in the living room if you have one.......and what is in there? Take a picture, up load it.

THE POINT? It's a long wait for furniture. ........there may be ways to look better while you wait for the right pieces, The sectional/chaise? Big mistake. The other mistake? Blame the architect - these rooms, clipped off corner and fire on an angle NEVER work really well. And unless you toss the console and the chairs and mime your "inspo, couch loaded" photo? Forget seating two families. Sorry......do the homework inches: ) for now, AND later

Have you flipped the sofa and chairs locations? With the possible exception of the chaise portion of the sofa, this doesn't look like a comfortable place to watch TV. The two chairs are rigid and armless; more appropriate at the head and foot of a dining table or facing each other over a chess/game/breakfast table elsewhere. If the TV were on the wall above the credenza and you used two 3-seat sofas, it would be more comfortable. The most versatile seating is usually a 3-seat sofa and two comfortable armchairs, which can be swivels. Have you considered modifying the room itself? You could reduce the size of the opening to the kitchen, closing the wall opening and wiring it for TV to hang on an articulated arm. That could open both walls left and right of the fireplace for a pair of sofas. You could float a couple of swivel chairs elsewhere in the space. Another thought is a circle of swivel chairs; if appropriately scaled you might get 5-6 of the in the space. A bench under the window would serve as additional seating. Another idea is to place a sofa perpendicular to the fireplace with two swivel chairs opposite that could turn to TV on the new wall. I don't think you should concern yourself with the rug until you finalize the arrangement.

I see two options:
Option 1: corner tv stand in the corner of the stairs and end wall and couch can float (if enough room), in front of windows or maybe where it is. Other seating can be figured out once the large items are.

Option 2: tv on the stand centered on the wall and couch where it is. If it’s a curve tv you can see it from anywhere if it’s not get gliders under the legs to tilt while in use or could hang on the wall with a swivel flat mount to move as needed and flat on wall while not in use.
I don’t mind the tv on fireplace but a mantle is such a missed opportunity for personal decor and mounting it would be extremely too tall. We mounted ours over our fireplace (which looks about the height of yours now) and it caused neck issues over time.
We are tv watches so tv’s a must but our next one will be a frame/portrait one.
If you have the funds I’d also replace the chairs as they are beautiful but I think look a little too formal for a living room unless this is a formal living room and you have another family room. If that’s the case than hubby looses tv here unless you want it there too, lol.
