Shuffles_gw, I don't have a Taxonomist in my back pocket to be sure, but it looks like an extremely well grown and bloomed specimen of Dendrobium Pierardii. That's one you could be proud to show off at any gathering of orchid growers. Congratulations!

Billsc, thanks for the compliment and the ID. This one really likes where it lives - outside, under a 50% shade cloth, in Tampa, FL. The reason I wanted the name is I just planted six this morning. That will give me a total of nine. I have other dendrobiums that like my growing area.

Shuffles, I feel your frustration with your little golden no name plant. I have been conducting an unofficial search for plants with Epidendrum magnoliae (conopseum) as one parent for several years now without any success. I have one plant X LC Richard Meuller, and am aware that it was used in about 20+ crosses over the years, but have not been able to locate any other crosses. Years ago when I worked in a large orchid nursery that had a propagation lab, I had the thought of trying to breed it and see if it would impart its cold hardiness into its offspring. I never got around to that project, but would still like to find a few plants with magnoliae as a parent. In my younger days I was finding the little Epi's in the deep swamps in the southern part of SC. They actually range up into the fresh water swamps around Wilmington, NC. Ok, enough tall tales for one night.

This one I got as one of those small orchids in a bag that Home Depot sells cheap. All I remember is it came from a nursery just south of Tampa, on the west coast of Florida. By the way, I lived in Wilmington, NC from 1974 to 1984.
