washing machine making a loud banging noise

I have a top loading Frigidaire. The basket inside the machine seems to be loose, and when it spins it really rocks the machine. Right at the end of the last spin cycle, it makes a very loud banging noise. I tried re-balancing it with books underneath, but it does not help. What is likely to be broken inside the machine?
