So happy about my tomatoes

I am so excited to be getting some tomatoes this year. For the past several years my tomato plants would die just when they were starting to get fruit. I did all the things I read about but nothing saved them. This year I bought disease resistant seeds, Defiant and Plum Regal. The plants are beautiful and healthy and fruit is ripening.

function, that story about the weeds in the tomatoes brought to mind a visit to a historical interpertative farm from early 19th century America. They left much of the weed vegetation to grow amongst some of the crops just for the benefit that you described.

oh, Yay! I'm jealous. I'm not growing any this year and I'd love to have some fresh and home grown. Spring was busy, and - it's almost not worth the daily fight with the deer over them. Not even the times I've put them in planters on the patio.

I bought a handful at the Farmers Market for a marinara sauce I want to make for this coming week...

Someone gave me a bunch of cherry, sweet 1 million (not 100) tomatoes and they were so sweet and a thin skin, I planted one this year and am really enjoying them. I also planted an Early Girl and those tomatoes ripen smaller than a plum. And have thick, tough skin. Might be weather.

My tomatoes are fried. Poor things couldn't take this heat despite me watering them every day it did not rain. I usually have BUCKETS to give away. This year,not many at all. I got some very early in the season before the heat really kicked in. Enjoy your maters!

Enjoy your tomatoes, Rose. It has not been the best of years for mine. Besides the heat which affected pollination, I dealt with racoons eating about half of mine. Despite a fence and mesh around the cages they managed to partially eat many of them. DH set a trap several times and trapped and relocated two but the damage was done. Then the crows came in and ate a lot of the Sun Sugars and Sweet Millions.

Ladypat, I find Early Girl is not one of the best tomatoes to grow for flavor or texture. Try a different variety next year.

I don't remember ever having trouble growing tomatoes. I plant my tomatoes against the house and are shaded from the afternoon sun . I usually buy 2 different varieties no preference. This year I did buy the disease resistance ones because I've never tried them before. They are starting to ripen

My dad (born 1915) would tell a story from when he was a little kid. They had a very dry and hot summer. They never weeded the garden that year and they were the only ones in the neighborhood with tomatoes. The weeds shaded the tomatoes. Lol.

Outside Playing, sorry to hear about your critter problems. Did you know that you can pick tomatoes as soon as they show a little red, bring them inside, and finish ripening them? I always pick them if rain is in the forecast, but it would save them from the critters too :).
