Can you post a measure floor plan?

Remove the mirror and all of the trim above the (first) mantel.

If you remove the cabinetry on the right, you are going to have what looks like a really deep niche. And then a problem of what to do with it.

If you do shelving, normal depth shelving, then I would block out behind in order to bring the shelving forward (and not have it stuck back in a deep hole.)

If you leave the cabinets, then straighten up the wonky doors. Looks like bi-folds originally intended to hide a TV?

Hi, I'm sorry I am not sure how to do that. The whole thing column to column is 6' wide by 12' high.

Removing the overmantel makes a big difference:

@kandrewspa we are not sure what our style is either?! Removing all the fluted columns and fancy crown ha been a full time job in the house. But toned down is good.

@Jean Yes! Wow. So much better already! Definitely will fill in that hole over the cabinets while we are at it.

@ci_lantro Agree! Yes we planned to do a false wall so the shelves are not too deep. And fill in that hole above the cabinets to be flush like the other side of fireplace. Since there is some equipment to hide - we are thinking maybe we leave the bottom cabinet and make it 2 doors not 4 and add shelving above it. With this style of mantel - I am unsure what the cabinet door style should be?
