Screen options for windows

How can you maximize the view outside your windows while protecting the windows’ wood exterior from rain?

I am not a fan of screens because they disrupt the views. I rarely open the windows. Even if I open windows in my current home, bugs will get inside because they can slip behind the screen frames.

However the windows here are wood, and there is a lot of driving rain here. The rain has destroyed some of the wood trim. I will replace that with PVC, but I do not want to replace the wood windows. They still need to be protected somehow. The screens provide some protection. (I am open to coating the window frames on the outside with a durable waterproofing product if that is advisable. The exterior window wood is painted.)

There is nothing special about how the screens are attached to the window. Just add-on clip hardware and screws that can be thrown away.

When I go outside during bug season, I’ll sometimes wear a mosquito net to keep them away from my face. I’ve noticed the black nets are easier to see through than the gray nets because they reflect less light. Is that true of screens? Are black screens easier to see a view through?

Is there screen material that is more durable than ordinary screens, that will help deter the rain or at least keep it from damaging the screen? Is there another option that is not a screen? I do want to be able to look out the windows at all times.

Is there a way to seal the screen frame to the window? Not permanently, but like a door seal? Is there a screen attachment option that can keep the frame edges tight to the window frame?

I might open the windows at certain times of the year if I knew that it would keep the bugs out. But I have cleaned a lot of bugs out from between the windows and screens.

So, ideally, I would like to find a solution that:

  1. maximizes the view
  2. seals the edges of the ”screen” to the window opening for blocking bugs (including gnats)
  3. prevents rain damage to windows

Any suggestions? Thanks!
