Hi agore, it depends on the type and color of cabinets you're thinking of. Using black slate floor is a great way to modernize the kitchen. You can also go the other way and use light limestone tiles, which is also very versatile and modern.

I'm not a designer but a domestic goddess (LOL). A dark floor in the kitchen will show everything from spills to dust. You will find yourself constantly washing the floor. A lighter color is much more forgiving. Have you thought of hardwood flooring which would look really warm with the ceiling of tongue and groove painted in white?

Obviously this husband has not heard of the " No one is happy unless Momma is happy rule" As a designer I find that most people are afraid/dont like things they havent seen before.. hence why most homes are blah beige on beige. The pics David posted above show a perfect black slate floor contrasted with light cabinets. Dont be afraid to paint that tounge and groove ceiling! As far as the cleaning .. yes darker floors show dust/dirt.. but I'd imagine you'll be so pleased with the new kitchen that you will want to keep it perfect at all times.
