`I would remove all the brick and drywall over it.

Does not look like you use it. The firebox is very small. The raised hearth is a tripping hazard. Firebox is open so it is an energy hog...if that is a real fireplace with chimney??

@ci_lantro Thank you for the suggestion. It is along the lines of what I want. It is a real gas fireplace with chimney. we just dont use it as we have a toddler and want something more child friendly

Maybe paint the brick or whitewash it or whatever is better for the brick, then add a mantel and other things...it is called a surround? I don't have a fireplace, never have, so I don't know the terminology. Like for example:

Thank you all for the ideas. much apappreciated

I would not drywall over it. A toddler is a toddler for a little while. A cozy fire in winter is nice.

There are great child proof screens for FPs I agee toddlers grow fast . I do also agree a proper gas insert would at least save energy . As for the stlye what is your style? Is the hearth required where you live if you have aproper gas insert? It is not required where I live but very regional so I would check that out for sure .
