It looks like the machines were stacked before - half of the upper cabinet appears to be missing. Try that again and in the space where the dryer is now, get storage and shelves for laundry supplies and a spot where you can tuck a laundry basket. Instead of changing to a sliding door in the living room, consider changing the swing of the garage door so it doesn't interfere with whatever is behind it and both doors can lie flat on the same wall.

It’s not clear if the only way into that half bath (to the left) is through this laundry room. A definite complication . .

Change the door to the garage to one that swings out into the garage. My kitchen door to the garage was built like that to give more room in the kitchen.

Stack the washer and dryer if you like them stacked, (I don't).. If you change the garage door, you will have plenty of room.

The best space saver will getting stacking washer and dryer, hands down. That should allow you to install a barn door to your family room as well. That might also allow for a wall rack to hang brooms and mops and might allow for storage of an upright vacuum cleaner. Good luck!

We’re in California and I need to check but I believe Building Codes mean garage doors have to swing out into the garage 😩

Thank you everyone - the missing part of the cabinet was my husband’s kind efforts to prepare for the stacking 😳 When I said remove the cabinet, I wasn’t expected him to just saw half of it off 😆

So start by doing the door to the garage and is that an actual fire rated door? IMO you need storage and honestly the whole thing is a bit odd with the bathroom through the laundry .Or for that matter that space off the FR. IMO you will gain nothing from stacking the W& D what you will lose is a place to fold clothes for no real purpose Cahnage the door to the FR and thta garage door and put back some cabinets so all that stuff can be put away.
