Horizontal Beam

What's the best way we should expect to cover the seam at mid-point? We like it open this way (w/o the additional vertical posts), just want to know options/opinions/recommendations. We were told the ceiling will be fixed (buckled!).

Looking forward to comments...the wood ceiling does not look as if it were installed correctly. Why the gaps?

    Google "beam strap"

What is the finished design suppose to look like?

The seam is a feature, not a bug.

Joseph Cortlett? What do you mean, and what is the significance? Do you mean the seam appears decorative?

IMO this is not a n issue right now and I need to see the plan for the whole house exterior but IMO that whole thing looks cluncky and pretty sure that should have been on piece and that whole interior roof is a huge mess too.

Patricia, are you an architect now too?

    The seam is fine.

Actually I have some architectural education and that seam is fine but one piece would have been better and why does this have any effect on you at all. IMO we need to see the whole plan to make any informed comments on one element .

This is the elevation we received with the plan. In my mind, very simplistic.

    Thanx, everyone, for your input.

The plans we recv'd are certainly not what the engineer has. We recieved schedules for the different crafts. I certainly would think they have more intricate blueprints, especially to ID hiw much lumber and such to order. Are we to get a copy of those blueprints?

Sorry I need to see the whole house elevations this is not something you design in a vacuum and then you are ging to cover that peak with shakes and that wood plank ceiling .

I think the supports on your gable would look better like this

Gable decoration is different than simulated truss. The drafter of this house is lacking in knowledge.

Better plans for framing, absolutely. Material takeoff needs to be done by you, your GC, your framer or the local lumberyard. That is never part of the architectural drawings. Truss drawings are required to be stamped by the truss manufacturer verifying that they were engineered correctly.

A little off the topic, but I'm curious about the flashing details where the wainscot meets the lap siding, whether the exposed beam and posts are treated, the post base details, and how they propose to reinstall the wood planks to avoid buckling.

It appears the flashing in that location would be spelled 'caulk'.

I hope the house is not in a high wind or earthquake zone.

We have many of the same concerns you all have stated. This portion of our build is a nightmare! I think they used a new crew and they proved to be lacking in skill! Def going to walk with the Inspector after the framing inspection. And consult a lawyer, just in case 😬. Thank you all so much.

BeverlyFLADeziner, which program did you use to modify? We want to keep it open, if possible (and they didn't order the right cedar anyway!)
