kitchen lighting

We’re not looking to do an entire kitchen remodel, but I do want to update the island light with minimal electrical work. Do you have any suggestions?

A bit modern - in person, possibly the coffee color strengthens the look of wood flooring.

a lighting plan would be a valuable upgrade. just swapping fixture is not great value for the space overall.

    What is a lighting plan?

And the style is modern transitional. It opens to the fireplace and family room. The Island is around 48x 36

The ceiling is 12 ff and our budget is around 600

And yes, I want to get rid of the boob light, but I hate led and need non led options

Is that a typo? There's no way that's a 12 foot ceiling, and "around" is not a good word in design.

Dimensions matter greatly. For anything you select. For anywhere.

We're asking you to show the family room. And there are plenty of incandescent options, still.

STOP. This kitchen needs recessed lights, There is no way you should be redoing the entire kitchen and not adding those. You also dont pick an island light until you have at least a mock up to show us or you are about 70% done with the install. Do not put the cart before the horse. And please no giant cluster of pendant lights.

ALSO: you dont hate LED lights you hate the blue, non diming light. You need a lighting plan, you need to talk to some lighting people.

    ............ugggh.

I missed your mention of additional lighting [but good idea to have lots, with dimmers]. Working in kitchen at times needing max. lumens, why not clusters?

I'm no expert, but agree you need a lighting plan- more can lights properly spaced, pendants and under-cabinet light. I would take that $600 and start saving

For a white kitchen it's way too dark.

Pendant lights over the island would look nice. Consider under cabinet lighting as well. This would all go in your plan.

Respectfully, I do hate LED lights, regardless of the lumens, and we do have under the cabinet lighting. We don’t want a lighting plan right
now since we eventually want to redo the kitchen. All I’d like to do right now is update the island figure.

ok, so back to needing hints as to your style. and the measurements of the island. neither provided yet.

I meant that a cluster/ a group of bulbs could be appealing, a sort of focal area...?

Do you just hate that fixture or is it not lighting the island enough?..it looks like it should rotate so the fixture is more linear above the island…even possibly just change the glass part for something more modern?….taking the shade to a lamp store for newer options that will fit this fixture

Minimal electric work and a $600 budget suggests just buying one light fixture to replace what's there. Do a search for 'linear chandelier', 'kitchen island lighting', etc. If you want specific help, your style needs to be presented and dimensions of the island provided. I, too, can't imagine the ceiling is 12' based on the door in your photo. Looks more like 8 1/2 to 9'.
