Our new build has a loooong hallway, 4.5 feet by 32 feet.

I'm looking at a lantern style pendant. They all come in varying width and lenths. I know we need a 7 foot head clearance for 9 foot ceilings so I have guidance on the heighth of the fixture, but what about the width? I don't want a semi flush mount, so only looking at hanging pendant at this point.

Some are 12" wide, some 15". What is too big? Too wide?

Is there a general rule to follow?
