Blooms From the Past Few Days

I finally had the ffo on Blue Swallowtail. It was one of those that the deer devoured all the buds back in mid-May. A new one that I added last year, it was only one fan at the beginning of the season and I watered it regularly in the hopes that it would rebloom. And so it did start reblooming at the beginning of this past week.

As I watched the scape develop I was suspicious that this wouldn't turn out to be Blue Swallowtail, mainly because the branching and bud count were so much higher than the registration stats. The second reason I was skeptical was because I had received one wrong plant from the same order. Blue Swallowtail turns out to my Bud King this year with 27 buds and five-way branching - on a rebloom scape! It's registered as having 18 buds and four-way branching.

White Ambrosia started reblooming today in the same bed as Blue Swallow. I think the original scape had 11 buds. This rebloom scape has 18 buds and better branching. It's not nearly as white as blooms on the original scapes that flowered when temps were near 100. The temp starting out this morning was 69 degrees, and the past days had highs in the mid-80s.

Tides Roll In started on another rebloom scape today. This is its third rebloom scape.

Spacecoast Irish Illumination finished reblooming a couple of days ago. I hope this one flourishes because I think it will be a stunner at clump strength.

I'm anxiously awaiting the ffo on Jewel of Tavares later this week, and I have a few more seedlings with rebloom scapes coming. So the daylily show is not over yet.

I'm also getting a bit of rebloom on two of my clematis vines.

I have the white Sweet Autumn Clematis is blooming in three places, although I haven't taken a picture of it. The Wild Ageratum is full of its blue blooms, and the Japanese Anemones and Chrysanthemums have just started opening. It will be a lovely Autumn!

Great rebloomers! I love all the things going on with Blue Swallowtail and how great it is showing off now. White Ambrosia looks spiffy with all those ruffles and I agree Spacecoast Irish Illumination would be spectacular in clump form. Your clematis are pretty-I don’t have any that rebloom.

Kate - I remember we both got Blue Swallowtail from Northern Lights at the same time, and yours did bloom the first year. How was its performance this year? Did it rebloom for you?

Debra, Blue Swallowtail was lovely again this year. I need to move it as it sits behind three of your seedlings that have multiplied into big clumps and are much taller. It did not rebloom this year.

Pretty blooms on Blue Swallowtail.It is nice to see your garden has so many still blooming for you. I love clematis and both of yours are impressive.

Those are beautiful, Debra! I especially like Blue Swallowtail. By the way, Leonard has grown roots to the bottom of the pot, and I will be planting him from his pot at the end of the week. Doing really well. Next season will be so much fun even though it is the sleep year for a lot of the new ones.

Impressive blue color showing up on Blue Swallowtail........My Spacecoast Irish Illumination never was a fast increaser, but if yours is in ground that may be different for you.......I do like Clematis but the only Clematis whose leaves looked good throughout the season for me was the very invasive Sweet Autumn Clematis. The seeds of that are still sprouting all over even though it's been gone for years. Some of my neighbors were not amused when it showed up at their houses..................Maryl

Sherry, Kay, Julia and Maryl - I'm more impressed with Blue Swallowtail's plant habit than I am its "blue" eye. I have seen eyes far more blue than it has.

Maryl - Yes, Sweet Autumn Clematis does produce a lot of seed. I now have it growing on the back fence (my neighbor's), my hedge, in the front yard of the house and the side yard. But I don't mind because I love those prolific, fragrant white flowers. SC Irish Illumination has gone from the original two fans last year to four now. I hope it will keep doubling in fans each year.
