I haven’t lived in an area with a true Autumn in years. I don’t decorate because it seems so out of place to have Fall colors and gourds and such when outside the grass is green and flowers are blooming. Sigh…. I miss a good Fall. 😭

I love EVERYTHING fall and it goes from the Sept. apple harvest with the rich reds and yellows of turning leaves to the deeper golds and browns of Thanksgiving come November. I am unaware there is anything 'trendy' about fall! It's cyclical and just in time when we are itching for a bit of change.

The only "season" I change my decor for is Christmas but I do love pumpkins and put a few outside by my entry for Halloween but pretty much a minimalist for seasonal decor

Here's an African Calabash bowl (from Ghana, I think) that I use for Halloween candy:

    Some warm decor.

I like warm textures, for example, I would change cushion covers to thicker textile, I love orange so somewhere that colour would be in there. I usually have fall leaves in their design.

I have a small decorative apple basket that I put wooden apples in. I also have some leaf shaped pottery in warm tones. I put out Fall candles as well. I’m not a big seasonal decorator, but a few small touches like these are enough to me.

I tend to change over in September using non-themed decor, so its life span is longer. Closer to (Canada) Thanksgiving, I’ll place gourds into my regular kitchen centrepiece and add some potted mums in living room. When entertaining, a fall centrepiece on dining table.

I love fall. My three favorite months of the year are coming (or here), and I simply love it! For me, I use mostly faux decor. I'd prefer real--pumpkins, flowers, wreaths--but my cats and the drought mean that using faux is much safer. I am counting the days until I get them out of the shed and begin displaying them. Most of my decorations are faux pumpkins in wood, twigs, silver, gold, glass, resin and more. The go up October 1 and stay up until the Friday of Thanksgiving weekend. I have almost nothing Halloween as I loathe it so what I have for fall covers almost two full months.

Fall decorations around here starts after labor day and taken down the day after Thanksgiving. Mine has been up for a few weeks. The Halloween decorations went up outside on Friday and Saturday because it wasn't raining. I'm not going to be home this week and who knows what the weather is going to be like after that. Some people will put up their Christmas decorations before Thanksgiving if we get some nice days, but I refuse to. I'm usually out there with cold numb hands putting them up the weekend after.

Summer is my least favorite season so I'm always very excited for fall. For me, it mostly means freshening up my interior and getting it ready for the mud that comes with more rain and eventually snow, organizing coats and jackets so we aren't scrambling when the temps drop 40 degrees, and dusting the barn for the nights the horses have to come in when it's too cold. For the humans inside, I start off with my favorite Halloween decorations. In November, the overtly Halloween pieces will get packed up and the rest will be incorporated into "regular fall" through Thanksgiving. Outside I add mums (and replace them as needed when they inevitably die.)

I guess you could say this is a reason to use faux pumpkins. However, we have squirrels all over and they’ve yet to go after any of my real pumpkins.

I like decorating for Halloween. Black, purple, skulls, creepy things.

    Jinx, that carved pumpkin’s adorable!

I’ve lined our walkway with “pumpkin lanterns” like this one. Somewhere I have a photo of them on our walkway. I got the idea one year from Sunset magazine.

This fun witch came from HomeGoods long ago. She’s on display every Halloween.

This was the photo I saved from Sunset for the walkway lanterns.

Thank you, Chloe … love all your decor!

I don’t have any pumpkins outside yet, will soon. Hoping it gets a bit cooler (Tx). Luckily, we have a pasture behind us to toss pumpkins after the holidays. The wildlife loves them. :)

I hear you regarding the heat! It wiil be 100 for us today (SoCal). 🥵

Some of the Halloween decorations are up. I just add on to the fall decorations. Hubby got to do the blow ups and light ups yet. I love decorating for Halloween, but we don't get any kids because we live on a private rd. Lol. The grands enjoy it though. The pumpkin wouldn't be picked until next weekend.

I just made the pumpkin tower this year. I want to get some more snakes to put on it.

I'm not the only witch in the kitchen.

Function, awesome! That horse! Love it all. :)

    Pumpkins and mums!

    I still laugh at this.

I love all the fall gourds and pumpkins, but one thing I also enjoy is pulling out some spooky books and having them on my coffee table - The Annotated Dracula, "The Life and Afterlife of Harry Houdini," and a little pumpkin covered book, "Poems Bewitched and Haunted" are all out and ready for browsing.

This room is very tastefully done. It's cozy and welcoming.

Fall in Oregon means dark, gloomy, rainy weather so I bring in soft and warm textures. My home is all white and light neutrals with wood floors and black accents. I change pops of color in pillows, art and throws with the seasons. Fall and winter are orange/rust and dark greens. I play down the orange and highlight the greens between Thanksgiving and mid-January.

I got an early birthday present today.

Saturday, October 1, I got out my autumn decorations so the house is looking quite cheery. On the normally near-empty top of the long white display case in the living room and the top of the three small white bookcase in the den I have laid out all my pretty faux pumpkins, mostly glass but also twig, velvet, mercury glass, ceramics, resin and more and have faux fall leaf vines woven among them. (I live in southern California where the prolonged drought means that ants sometimes come inside for water;I keep them out of my house by having a hose at the far end of the property and running it lightly for a few minutes twice a day. But the warmth, now in the mid- to high-seventies, means I decided not get get real pumpkins this year, No sense tempting the ants.)

I also have a pretty footed bowl on the coffee table filled with colorful putka pods; it's one of my favorite decorations and surprisingly the cats ignore them. I also bring out my framed antique postcards of Thanksgiving; I also have scanned them and made them into postcards I have printed and send out to friends. My favorite is a drawing of a man in Victorian bed dress awake, sitting up in bed and holding the covers up to his chin while staring in horror at a ghost of a turkey in the doorway. If you have read A Christmas Carol, you'll get the reference. I laugh every time I see it.

I also have some things outside on the patio table, some wheat, a faux pumpkin, a pretty autumn bouquet, and autumn leaf garland. And last but not least a pillow with a lovely image of a couple of pumpkins in the field on it. Nothing orange except some of the leaves, though.

I love these last three months of the year because my home goes from somewhat minimalist to a bit overdone. Not by much and most people would probably say it's on the minimalist side but it is more than normal for me. And I like that. It signals the start of the only holiday season(s) I celebrate in the entire year.

In addition to including warm fall accent colors, I love having apples on the dining room table. I picked up this oversized vintage colander at a flea market many years ago. Have it atop an old cotton seed/feed sack that I use as a table runner.

Real or good fake pumpkins (ya there is such a thing) on surfaces, in urns, on window ledges. Pumpkins.

Not good photo quality, but quick shots I took last night:

Still have a couple of things to add this weekend. I have a lot of lights and decor in the entry, but couldn’t get a good pic last night.

    Awesome job Jinx.

We went to the local Halloween pop up restaurant last night. They started it in 2020 with temporarily closing in their outside pavilion and adding heaters since technically you couldn't eat inside the restaurant, but closing in the pavilion outside was allowed. Lol. . It was sooo popular that they add more to it every year. The Halloween pop up went over big so they started a Christmas one in 2020. We all love going there.

    Thanks, Function!

    That restaurant sounds fun.

Jinx, you do such a nice job! Those are great!

I bought this ghost at HomeGoods about 7 years ago.

I make these swags each year for our lamp post and mailbox. They get pretty thrashed outside.

    Chloe, thank you!

Oh my goodness, I remember seeing your gorgeous swags years ago, but couldn’t remember who posted them! I’ve had them saved as inspiration forever. :)

Thanks, Jinx! I‘ve pretty much made the same swags each year. They get pretty ”tired” looking between the sun and any moisture at night.

    I love threads like this…so fun! 🎃👻🍁

My friend sent this to me today and it’s the best Halloween decoration I’ve seen yet!

Fall is when I get to plant a few flower pots that won’t burn up in SoCal sun and heat. Even my rosemary died this summer.

Absolutely love the creativity and talent in the pictures being posted.

OMG, Sarah, that’s definitely creative! You have to wonder how people even come up with some ideas!!!

I need to keep it simple, easy and affordable. Pretty broke right now.
I do love fall decorating very much!
    Any suggestions for me?

I like to keep things subtle in my 100 year old farmhouse.

    Beautiful, Jennifer!

Catherine, try thrift stores, garage sales, local online buy/sell sites, etc.

These wicker pumpkins came from a dollar store in my town, all three under $10.

For real pumpkins, our local Farmer’s Market has very good deals, do you have one in your town?

For arrangements, I head outside and find real materials to use — twigs, florals, etc, and supplement with dried berry sprigs from craft stores.

In the past, I’ve found nice things at garage sales (and sold some myself).

If you can be more specific about how/where you want to decorate, I’m sure others will have more suggestions. :)

Catherine Trainor, beside garage sales and thrift stores Pinterest has alot of DIYs if you're crafty for fall that are inexpensive.

I did this as a craft project wirh my grands. It is just a Dollar Tree foam pumpkin, white paint, mod podge and a paper napkin.

Catherine, what area of the country are you in? Do you have pretty leaves, twigs, or small branches you can make into an arrangement? You can always spray paint small branches gold or silver; they'd be stunning in a glass vase which can be very inexpensive at a thrift store.

Trader Joe's has those lovely mini white pumpkins at 69 cents each and a mini cinnamon "broom" for a few dollars.

Throwing some spices (cinnamon sticks, star anise, orange or tangerine peels, dried apples and more much make wonderful simmering potpourris.

A string or strings of fairy lights in a vase or around some pinecones and leaves (if you have pets be very careful about which ones you use as many can be toxic to pets or children) is gorgeous and understated.

Michael's has small bags of faux white mini pumpkins, which you can marble with nail polish ( https://www.aliceandlois.com/marbled-indigo-pumpkins/ ) or cover with thrift store sweaters ( https://www.hgtv.com/lifestyle/holidays/fall-upcycle--give-pumpkins-a-cozy-makeover-with-old-sweaters ). And here is a pretty door pumpkin made from twigs: https://www.lilyardor.com/thanksgiving-fall-pumpkin-wreath/

You can also gather white or autumn-colored hydrangea flowers and arrange in inexpensive vases or bleach pinecones:

If you google "fall decorating on a budget" or "fall decorating free" or similar phrases lots of returns come up. (Some will be retail stores but others have just ideas, which is what you are looking for.)
