Can you tell us where in the world this is growing? Also pictures of the fruit on the tree would help. I am dubious about the Pyracantha id. Again a picture of the berries on the tree with foliage would help. Also an indication of their size.

Meanwhile compare with Podocarpus macrophyllus.

From the limited information on the fruit, my guess would be a persimmon tree. It is native to the southeastern US, and has many cultivars that are available in nurseries.

You also said it was growing in a friends yard, If your addition was carved out of a woods, it would not be surprising to find that a persimmon tree was left.

Similar leaves, fruit and seed to Podocarpus falcatus.

The leaves are not those of a persimmon, nor are the pits. Plus the fruit lacks the four section sepals typical of persimmon.

Happy to go with P.gracilor (Syn. Afrocarpus), and that interesting article explains how a relatively obscure African tree arrived in the USA.

But I did note this line...

The tree is growing in California, USA so zone 10b. I'll ask my friend for a picture of the tree with fruits
