How to find grainline on polyester velvet fabric.

I'm trying to find the grainline on upholstery polyester velvet. It won't rip along the grain as I have done with other velvets and the back is so tiny I can't follow a row with my eye like I'm able to on prior fabrics. How else can I find grainline so my over 2m strip of fabric is not crazy wonky by the far end.

Probably too late now, but it's likely a knit fabric and not woven, so ripping won't work. For velvet, you can run your hand over it to determine the direction of the nap.

I would mark the cutting lines on the back with chalk.

I agree that the backing is most likely a knit rather than woven..
