straight down pix are very hard to interpret.. and we cant see the stems.. if they were red or purple in might suggest poke ..

what difference does it make.. you got to get them out of there.. or they will seed more.. and ruin your whole bed ..

so.. why not dig them out.. and take some good pix ...

the odds of them being something valuable. are low to nil as with most anything that freely seeds itself into your garden.. that right there is a GIANT warning sign.. that you probably dont want it..

Its just more mature foliage of the Trachelospermum. Trace the stems backward to confirm.

The whole bed needs more water.

Thanks, I think Tracelospermum is correct for both, though I'm reluctant to believe the large leaves are just older foliage. The sap is indeed milky, and the leaves are opposite, so that fits with Tracelospermum. I'm thinking the larger leaves are jasminoides (Confederate jasmine), and the smaller leaves are asiaticum. Of course, neither are "true" jasmine. The larger leaves are on long stalks that can tower over that of the the smaller leaves, again, more like jasminoides. Not really a ground cover. I also found a couple of bean-like seed pods, which jasminoides is known for.

More water?? Everything is quite lush, and these plants are all incredibly drought-tolerant.

Correct about the "H". Interesting about downward leaves. It's been a hot, and dry summer, but the asiatic jasmine seems to hold up very well, as it does every hot and dry summer. After a week of 110F temps, they can be a little droopy, and I sometimes irrigate, but it's been a chilly 90F for a while, and I just let them do their own thing. They NEVER brown or die from lack of water.

I only have asiaticum. It is in a pot and, although it never browns, it definitely droops when it is thirsty. As for the 'chilly' 90f, that is a very rare temperature in my garden. But the Trachelospermum still lowers its leaves when thirsty.

Did you try tracing a stem back down?
