That's not it, but here's a hint: flowers, foliage, and seeds are edible.

    American mountain ash? (Sorbus americana)

Sorbus domestica / Sorb Apple? Don't know if this is hardy enough in Central Illinois.

    Hint #2: native to Asia.

Any chance it's Koelreuteria paniculata (Golden rain tree)?

The picture of the leaves, from down low, make it hard to be sure,

Sorbus aucuparia, European mountain ash? (extends across Asia)

    Yellow Horn, Xanthoceras sorbifolium.

Oh, you're so close, but no Sorbus cigar. The third and final hint: "...the flowers, appearing on terminal racemes, are white with very light green streaks and a center that ages from yellow on the newest flowers to a gorgeous red orange on older flowers. Flowers are roughly 1″ in diameter with five petals."

    I know ..... but I cheated.

LOL. Floral, let's call it resourcefulness! What is it?

Xanthoceras sorbifolium. You gave the game away by putting that quote in. 😉

Not anything I have seen in person so just a wild guess...........Xanthoceras sorbifolia?

Looks like we've got two winners! I tried growing this small tree a long time ago, but it didn't stick. I don't think cold hardiness was the issue, but I can't remember what happened to it. I was an inexperienced gardener, so improper planting may have been the cause. I found it at Highland Nursery in St Paul, but have never seen it in commerce since.

That one looks like a relatively healthy specimen. Did you see any seeds on it? The few that I've observed over the years weren't really anything to write home about, but I never had the chance to see them in flower. The one pictured on this page from Conservation Garden Park (Utah) is pretty impressive: Yellowhorn

OK, we're ready for the next Tree ID challenge ...

Serious question here...can nobody see my posts? Weird things have been happening to my presence here since I lost my registration details and came back as shaxhome1. Several posts I've made didn't appear or didn't move the subject up in the list. I can see this on my screen, but evidently nobody else does? (I suppose if this can't be read it'll get no replies either!)

I just realized that shaxhome1 got it first. Sorry about that, mate…and congratulations!

ArborDave, I‘ll check the archives to see what I can come up with. BTW, that Utah Yellowhorn is spectacular. I had to take a long second look at that one. I’ve never been to Salt Lake City, but I might make seeing it a priority if I do. Yes, I like trees!

Not a problem, but many of my posts have been failing to appear here since I had to change my online name, then moved to India for work. I wondered if I was being blocked automatically? And from the image I attached above, it appears that others can't see my posts either. Very strange happenings...

Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get me!

shaxhome I wonder if it is time delayed. I recall tofitropic (or similar) having that same issue posting from perhaps Borneo. Odd that there did not seem to be an issue when you were in Oz.

When I'm not signed in I can't see my post with the flowers of Xanthoceras. When I'm signed in I can see that post. I'm in The Netherlands.

Something is going on. Shax’s answer wasn’t there when I responded.

    Same here, floral.

I liked your comment but couldn't see Shax's post at the time.

Sorry to revive this old thread! But I'm back in Oz for a short break, and thought I'd try a post from here to see if it appears...

yes it appeared here, shows 1 hour ago. It's now 8:17 pm central time US. (eta: Sunday).

Thanks, Bill. Yes, I posted that an hour ago. Now 1.59pm Monday here. So I'd surmise that there is a time delay for international posts from India, but not from here in Oz. One of life's mysteries!

Just noticed that I'm shaxhome again, not the shaxhome1 I was forced to adopt! Sometimes I think I'm going crazy on this forum...
