Kitchen backsplash help

Hi everyone, this is my first post in here but I'm having a hard time finding a relatable thread. If one exists, I'd love a referral!
I just had my backsplash installed with Taj Mahal quartzite to match my countertop. The countertop looks incredible aside from some light water stains (, that's another issue altogether). The fabricating/installers said that seams were necessary around the window which I understand completely. The problem is two fold:
1. They are charging me for the entire area square footage even though pieces were cut in strips and instead of a large section with window area cut out. Is this common practice to charge for area of stone that is not received or am I getting played?
2. The seam on the counter looks flawless but the seams on the backsplash stick out like a sore thumb. I'm not sure if it's more difficult to get a tight seam vertically and this is necessary or if I should be expecting it to look the same as the horizontal countertop.
Any opinions/insight would be appreciated as I handle this discussion with the company.
Will post pictures in the comments below.
