Help with roof and exterior appearance!

We have an older rancher we are remodeling. We are replacing the roof with architectural shingles but would like to somehow incorporate dormers or something to the front porch roof too. There isn’t any living space on the second floor so just looking to make the roof and front of the house more appealing. Any ideas on how to improve the appearance?

NO to the fake dormers. Dormers should indicate a second story and your angle does not do that and they will just look fake. I feel once you change the roofing colour everything will look much better. That roofing just looks too pink.

    Another angle of roof lines

Another "no" to fake dormers. Get the new shingles on, and then work on landscaping.

I would scale down the overhang on the front section if possible. What you have now is kind of a faux southern plantation look that is a fail since the house is only one story. You should still have a front porch, but it should be something that looks more natural with a ranch. Definitely no fake dormers. Get an architect to draw something for you so that a builder knows how to build it. It's something that could be botched if the angles aren't right.

I agree, no fake dormers. The center roof should be lower like the picture posted above by kandrewspa. If that cant be changed, then, it should look a lot better without that awful pinkish color roof. I would use a charcoal color roofing shingles.

The purpose of a metal roof is that it lasts a lifetime. Why would you remove it to put a lesser-quality roof on instead? You can paint the standing seam roof if you don't like the red color.

If you wish to alter the roof line, then consider clerestory windows or a shed dormer to add light to the interior of your home.

It’s not a standing seam metal roof.

It’s a 5 ridge metal roof. Doesn’t look the greatest up close but would painting be an option? Would it hold up well? We’re located in MD. We took down all of the black walnut trees that were dropping nuts on the roof for years so now there won’t be that to contend with. Just bought the house and the roof color does have to go!

The columns should support a large beam, which in turn, supports the roof.

This will help reduce the visual height of the porch roof, as will a darker shingle.

Consider painting the shutters a darker color.

I'd definitely look into painting by a professional metal roof painter before replacing the roof. In my neighborhood of tear downs being replaced by $4M houses, all the new houses have metal roofs completely or at least some metal roofing on accent places. Metal roofs are all the thing now and do last forever.

If the roof isn’t damaged and can be painted, that is the first best idea. Architectural shingles, in charcoal gray, are versatile and would make your large roof more textured and interesting. But if a dormer, with windows that add light to the interior, are in the mix, then the roof will have to be replaced.

Do your research before making any final decisions.

The bright red roof overwhelms your house. With a gray or black roof, your house will look pretty classic and doesn't need dormers. You might do your shutters in navy blue.
