I have a golden elm in the back yard. The leaves look like those in your first photo. So my guess is Ulmus glabra.

In NY it could be an American elm. At least it doesn't look to me like a Siberian elm.

I am in the South where we have a lot of volunteer elms known as slippery elms. They are similar in structure to the winged elm. Leaves are similar but the slippery elm tree does not grow as majestic as the winged elm, meaning the branches do not grow as wide producing a larger canopy. Both have (in my opinion) rubbery like branches and strange bark patterns. The winged elm is easier to work with however, where as the slippery elm, is the harder of the two. Hope this makes sense.
