Landscape Design Question

Respectfully, please don’t ignore the question and suggest radical/expensive changes or just tell us how we should have done things differently.

Our home is MCM and we used the last bit of remodel $$ to do some last min landscaping/cleanup.

Question: In the last photo below, should we make the row of rocks (between the grass and walkway) wider by another 12”?

- It’s currently 18” wide and we’ll be installing sod + edging too. We also plan to prune the bush in the center walkway to be more like a bonsai tree (next spring).

Here’s the before:

Here’s the after (please disregard the trash cans and ”stuff” that will be removed):

You made a nice improvement to the outside of your house, now let some landscaping make it shine. I'd prefer no rocks outside the sidewalk. How will you keep them in place? Maybe what you need is a row of low plants to replace the bushes that you removed. What horticultural zone are you in? Consider a garden of native plants or consult with a landscape architect that has landscaped other properties of the same style as yours.

Yes, make the rock bed on the lawn side of the front walk wider. It can be the same width as the rock bed against the house. Add a few bonsai accoutrements to the new wider rock bed for balance.

Now for the advice you did not ask for. Get rid of the gross runway light fixtures along the walk and do some better spot lighting to enhance the entire front entry.

Yes to 12 inches wider. It will balance the rocks on the other side. Wow! The improvements look great. I am a sucker for corten steel if you are willing to put in some more $$ edging to frame the rocks.

@Christopher CNC - forgot to mention to ignore those lights in the photo, they were there from before & I agree.

I don't think you need the rocks on the outside of the sidewalk.

I agree a wider rock bed will look more intentional. Nice house. Good luck!

Wonderful improvements!! And I see a baby carriage. So I would remove the rocks. (They are missiles to young ones! Lol) and add a couple long planter boxes to that edge instead. Something like these.

Those are for “concept”. You can find in concrete look too. Just do long and low across that front edge. Doing great job. Excellent color choices!

In the future consider a ground cover instead of landscape rocks. See the lower lefthand corner in the picture below.

Consider ornamental grasses in your future landscaping plan. They complement MDM architecture so well.

If you do use rocks in the future, consider smooth River Rocks. They are more $$$ but provide a nice contrast to the angles on MDM homes.

Black mulch is also an option for landscaping, but remember to apply that spray that keeps the mulch in place.

Apply that spray that keeps the mulch in place.

That would be mulch glue I guess. Does it come in black? What will they do to gardening next?

I'd put in groundcovers instead --- creeping phlox or bearberry. Lowbush blueberries would be good, too, if they are right for you climate.

I guess I don’t see the design intention of the row of rocks, it really doesn’t work now but I don’t know that more will help it. I would install my sod right up to the path

I think it's to make the walkway look wider but I don't know what that accomplishes.

And, when you get the chance…power wash your front sidewalk and your drive. You will be amazed at how it makes things look fresh and new.

From a design perspective, widening the rock bed on the lawn side to the same width as the bed against the house is going to give the front entry more of a courtyard effect as well as balance the rock bed against the house. Lawn or a groundcover up to the walkway would make the front entry look half finished in a way.

The previous short hedge in front was ok and I wouldn't be opposed to separating the lawn from a wider rock bed with another. The much more open front without the hedge is nice though and a very short block wall would be an even better dividing line to enhance a courtyard entry effect. Block from the big box is an affordable DIY project you may have time and money for one day.

I would also consider removing the overgrown bushes that are directly in front of your home. And, perhaps, pruning the large bush to the left of your door into an interesting shape, depending upon what it is. Sometimes, less is more.

I would leave the rocks as is and the area in front of the rocks that is now dirt, I'd make into a bed of ornamental grasses lined up.

This is my fave for inspiration for a MCM home IMO too much curve is not the right look . If you want some panters along the front I would do corten steel ones all along that front part where the bushes were or just like this with gravel and pots .

I’m not a rock fan. I had rocks at a former house along with two young sons and a Labrador retriever. You would be astounded at how many places those rocks can appear!

I like the rocks and would add more. But then again, I'm a grass hater.
