What do you mean ‘what to do with them’? Do you want to remove them (possible but will require floor repairs) or are you asking about color? Either match the trim for a little contrast or paint it the wall color for a little more subtlety

I think I would leave them for now and see what you think after painting and decorating. You could definitely remove them and it will look great but maybe they lend some unique character to the home. I wonder what it would look like squared off and wood exterior 🤔🤔

I wonder if you can add more hardwood to the home and just sand the existing hardwood and stain to match …

I'd have to see the rest of the house to know if they'd have to be dealt with. Many homes with pointless columns have so much other ostentatious accoutrements, it makes sense to just embrace them all. (I am not saying that THIS house has that issue but I don't know.)

From what I can see, there are other things I'd do before messing with the columns. I wouldn't consider removing them with out a very through plan for the adjoining rooms including flooring, steps, etc. I'd let them be.

Currently it’s narrow plank oak I think. It has one of those dark stripes around the edges (that I don’t care for). Would be easier if we could sand and match but either way yes, I’d like to have hardwoods.

Because you are changing the flooring I would 100% remove the columns.

18 years ago I had a client's columns 'tea stained' to add some interest. But again that was 18 years ago.

IMO they kind of work with the style you are planning so maybe make those decisions first then decide if they stay or go . Right now IMO they keep th steps down a really obvius thing so thingk about how to handle that area if toy go all the same flooring I see an accident waiting to happen.

I would install curved metal railings on either side of the stairs to make the stairs more obvious.
