Hi Ken, I am a Boston Lala, and I've done some work on front yard (and back yard) in both my Boston-area houses and asked many questions here! I'm not sure whether I'm the person you're thinking of but I've been around here for many years!

ps. This is actually my sister's privet, also in Boston-area. I told her what I thought it was but wanted confirmation from you expert identifiers.

Right at the start of my gardening adventure, I was reading a key, listing plants for difficult places. There was one plant which seemed to thrive in every single type of soil, any aspects, dry, wet, sunny, shady...literally everywhere, in every single category. My god, this sounds amazing - I must grow this plant - ligustrum.

I can clearly recall my vast disappointment on discovering it was privet - an utterly commonplace hedge plant of my childhood, mostly notable as a reluctant host for runaway stick insect experiments.
