No I’m ripping it out first and then doing the floor but i don’t want it to look like a construction zone for too long. we have quotes out for our kitchen and after the kitchen is done we will do flooring. The kitchen quotes are taking forever

Storage for off season shoes if you can find something to cover it with for a season - luan or beadboard panels come to mind.

So you just want to cover up the mess that will be there after you rip it out, before the flooringflooringflooringflooringflooring.

I would cover up the mess with a curtain and a tension rodrod, or even stapled in place. Or even a shower curtain or bed sheet if it is really just temporary. No sense in spending any money. Just use what you have available.

If neurotic, paint it black, All the cubby area under the tv, go in Pottery Barn and fill the niches with natural toned baskets.

Or you can head to PB and pay 800.00 for the same thing, essentially.

Do you think the current flooring doesn't run underneath it? It looks a lot like it does, in which case go ahead and rip it out. But that assumes the flooring project is months or maybe years away If just weeks or a month or two, I wouldn't worry about it one way or the other.

IMO you do the flooring before the kitchen install and so I think just leave it until you are ready to do all the rest .Take a pic from much further back so we get some context I like thta it puts the TV at close to proper viewng height.

I wouldn’t change it at this point, or try to cover, I’d clean it up. No wires showing, and edit the decor on the shelves. There’s nothing wrong with it — just make it look nice until you do construction. Find some pretty things to display, but keep it simple.

I agree with Artemis...it does look like the cubbies were added after the flooring went down. So go ahead and rip it out now.

Or ignore it.

Or do the flooring now instead of after the kitchen project.

What is your plan once you rip it out, will you keep the TV there? It looks like a deep space with a shuttered window on one side, an eyeball light above, and both are behind the TV. Is there a better spot for the TV as part of your reno? If so, you could mount art where the TV is, update the light fixture, style the shelves better and use the window for light.

In the meantime, you can do something similar - mount the TV on a long arm bracket which can be pushed to the wall when off and pulled forward when it is on. Paint the wall behind the TV a dark color like charcoal so it blends in better. The shelves looks cluttered, instead of a lot of small things, look at styling it with larger pieces.

What they asked^^. Would like to see pix of the room behind the TV. Might be best to rip out, drywall over and give the space to the room behind.

Depending on what this area is or what type of a room you have on the other side, I did this for someone a while back, they had basic cabinetry there and I gave them a suggestion to turn it into a bar area.

So this is open on both sides and the back of the TV is exposed in the other room? Was this once a doorway or a passage way between two rooms? At first I thought it was a recessed space.

It looks that the problem is not the floor, which does appear to run under it, but it looks as if it has been attached to the wall, made to look as if it were continuous with the wall, and you will need considerable wall repair once it is removed.

I advise that you not worry yourself much about whether you have baskets on those shelves ,or whatever. It is your house and your stuff and it is not messy.

Now that I realize that it is between rooms, or spaces, it looks awkward and I can see why you would want to remove it.

@Christine Holmes Here is another idea,

You can close the opening on the top, trim it out with a simple mantel surround around the bottom opening and hang the TV on the wall, something like this

On the other side of it not sure what that room is being used for, but you can do built-ins like in this example, or a closet, I mean there are so many options for how this entire opening can be modified, of course, what you want to spend on it.
