I don't think I've ever seen a Norway maple color anything other than bright yellow (very late), but who can say? A leaf closeup would help. I have seen sugar maples color w/a combo of bright red/orange and green tho (but I'd have thought sugar maples would be well over by 2nd week of Nov in MI).

I have a Norway maple and it only ever turns yellow, if even that; I’d love for it to turn a more vibrant color like that tree!! Some years the leaves just turn brown before falling off. But it actually looked pretty good this year, and still has some leaves on it. It’s always the last to drop leaves except for those nasty Buckthorns.

Not sure. Here are some of the leaves of my Norway maple.

Oldest horticultural trick in the book: show a leaf laying on the ground, and ask to identify the tree above it.

Take a picture of leaves attached to the tree, and/or the buds/twigs. They won't blow somewhere else and lie to you...

hmmmm even a blind squirrel find a nut once in a while.. lol....

I think @ken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5‘s specimen might be a sugar maple; fewer lobes than my norway maple leaves (mine have those two extra points at the bottom). I also identified mine as a norway vs a sugar maple several years ago by comparing ”helicopters”, as shown below. Ken, you’ll have to report back next spring/summer with your scientific helicopter findings!

See if the sap is milky

I'm pretty sure the tree in Ken's photo is a Norway, judging from the texture/size of the foliage (Ken's leaf photo is definitely a Norway). Some Norway cultivars can be shades of orange in the fall depending on weather and soil conditions (our dry late summer/fall was probably a contributing factor). Deborah often colors orange, and Crimson King can be a bronzy orange/red.

A tree that is dropping leaves prb'ly has little or no sap. And those leaves shown are definitely Norway maple and not sugar maple.
