Such a narrow vertical spot, I'd say no. Not sure I understood the need for panelling, is this due to small children or animals destroying this particular areas drywall ?

Personally I'd just paint the whole thing some form of white color & call it a day. If you're looking to add some "pop", installing even a small skylight would do wonders.... Whatever you end up choosing for this tiny spot, make sure it's a light/er color, as the staircase already looks darker than a dungeon ;) Good luck !

Sorry…. interrupted by a tragic news story. Anyway, I've thought of doing something special there too. I will be interested in the advice you receive. I have been concerned about the safety of hanging anything there that could fall, and, indeed, being up there to paint or wallpaper it. Getting the cobwebs with a ling-handled gadget is necessary.

If I could figure out the access, I thought of hanging a favorite weaving. I've also thought of some fancy light sculpture. Have you any thoughts about what you would like? Do you ever wonder if you liked it too much you might be staring at it one day and miss a step? I actually have thought that briefly. Again, I really don't know what if anything to do there and am excited you posted this question.

I think maybe some accent going up on the left hand side may even make it better. Or flutes but then it may feel smaller that way 🤔 and I think I’d get sick of looking at a painting of sorts

But since the wall is so long and narrow, the most effective statement would be a slight change in color…a real color..pale aqua is my fave as it is a pale sky color …even a pale lemony yellow may bring some light to the area…once you do the back wall you will get a feel for whether the side walls could be painted also..an interesting border at the color change (if you do 3 walls) would add a lot to the space… decoratively…it may reduce the fairly cramped feeling there

Oh, the side walls... Sometimes I think I'd like to hang a mural wallpaper there. There are some really awesome ones these days. It's still dangerous.

The side walls could also be some simple graphic angles…to distract the eye “ a little”….i wouldn’t get too creative …you don’t want to distract the eye too much…as you are walking down the stairs…

Hang a really cool LED light fixture there and be done.You are in need of lighting there anywhay so make it a great piece

A pendant or multi-pendant in interesting shape(s) or with cut outs or negative space so it casts an interesting light pattern will expand the space. An accent wall will emphasize the tall narrow shape. Wallpaper is better suited in a room.

I would find an interesting & colourful floor runner at least 6’ long, preferably something handmade with lots of texture and hang it on that narrow wall. Beautiful rugs are not only for floors. Add a light fixture to illuminate not only the area but the rug as well.

No. You want all eyes on the steps when going up or down a flight of stairs.
